Am I Doing This Correct? Please Help! CFM Calculations.

hey guys! I decided to start to grow in my spare room in the basement. However, a lot of work must be done. I'm trying to figure out the CFM required to ventilate my room. Here are the dimensions: Length=14 Width= 10 Height= 6.5 So, I multiply 14x10x6.5 and get 910 cubic feet. Now this is where I get confused. During my research I heard the fan should be able to adequately exchange the air in a grow room once every three minutes. Is this true? So I would take 910 and divide it my 3 to get the minimum cfm for exchanging the air in a grow room. 910/3= 303 CFM So did I do this correctly? Any advice would greatly help me out. Thanks guys and happy growing.

You could subtract the square feet of substrate you'll be using but your numbers are otherwise correct.

How much airflow you need varies with the setup. The plants in that sized area don't actually need 300CFM to breathe but having less fresh air might slightly decrease bud growth. On top of how much air the plants need, there's also how much heat needs to be removed. Are the lights cooled separately from the grow area air? A good lamp cooling setup can actually decrease temps whenever the lights are on and the grow area would be able to get by on much less airflow.

There are many variables to consider when constructing your air circulation system. Start with test runs using your lamps for 12hrs at a time. Monitor temps and adjust lamp & grow area airflow accordingly. I think the average person can tell the difference between plenty of fresh air and air that's getting stagnant just by standing in the room. Once you have a healthy habitat for the plants to grow in throw them in.

Thanks a lot mothersfinest! Everything you said makes perfect sence. However, I don't even have my lights yet! From what I'm hearing from others, I should figure out my light situation and than move on to the exhaust part, but thanks for clearing it up for me. Happy growing bongsmilie
