An issue of proximity

DISCLAIMER - I understand there are many different ways of growing marijuana, and many people manipulate growing situations to enhance flower yield, and this causes some people to say "well this works" and another says "well that works"..

A friend of mine and I were discussing how far plants should be spaced apart, and had trouble coming to a common ground with eachother on what was right - specifically on sativa strain. We have both seen Indoor/Outdoor/Rogue sativa growing in very close proximity to one another in the same soil (6 inches or less at times). Since sativa most times tends to grow tall, they seem to be much more tolerant of close proximity. I have seen a few threads on different websites including "rollitup", where some growers say that if the root structures come into close contact with each other that you can end up with your plants health deteriorating or possibly dying..however on the contrary people grow marijuana under other growing

vegetation to hide the marjuana plant. If the root structure being damaged hypothosis is correct, then how are these marijuana plants growing

underneath other vegetation surviving and thriving? Another thought that comes to mind is how closely

many marijuana plants will grow to each other at guerilla sites in the woods...also in the woods there are many variables - soil quality being one of them. My friend and I were just seeing alot of negativity about close proximity growing and how it

can be "deadly", however we are experiencing a "there are two edges to this sword" effect. In the next sentences when I say *Many people say* it simply means this is the majority opion IN MY OPINION of the readings I have done on sites such as *Rollitup

1) Many people say that regular dirt is insufficient to grow thriving marijuana, but fields of bud in the forest thrive and I am currently having success with a young sativa in a bowl of regular dirt from outside. I understand that enhanced soil is better, but it seems in my research of late people claim that regular dirt from outside doesn't work more often than it does.

2) Many people say that close proximity to other vegetation/flora/etc (including other marijuana plants) can/may killl the plant, however marijuana plants thrive with much vegetation around them in indoor/rogue/outdoor sites all around the world. I have read also that when some roots are in close proximity promote and share growth amongst each other via depositing/repositing nurtrients both indoors and outdoors.

3) Many people say that you need drainage/ventilation holes at the bottom of an indoor plant container, but I have seen some growers post/say that putting holes in the bottom of your medium encourages dehydration and exhaustion of valuable nutrients/materials that the plant would benefit in keeping in the soil, however nutrient levels and water levels must be more closley monitored and dispersed in a plant medium with no drainage holes.

I understand that I am simply comparing opinions on various growers in various situations, however I seem to find more often that not growers claiming that certain growing methods often kill plants when used, such as the 3 methods above. I understand that when you use enhanced soil/water/lighting/draining/spacing that your yield of flower may be greater, but not totally necessary to a healthy plant. Replicating mother nature seems to be the overall objective of growing indoors or in an outdoor-controlled-grow-situation.

So After typing all of this and going through many threads and posts, we have both come to the conclusion that it is just a matter of preference because the MJ plant can be grown and can thrive in so many different ways. It can be a bother however to see growers trying to pass off opinions as fact, such as the near-to-other plants and roots proximity issue. Growers with this and similiar attitudes have the "If you dont chew Big Red then Fuck You" moral.I realize I have completley elaborated on all my questions, therefore there really leaving no answer other than what I have already answered myself. So I just decided I would post this anyways because I thought well fuck it I typed it wasting my time so I'll waste yours. Oh, ya, and if you Chew Big Red
then Fuck You

Have you heard about Square Foot Gardening? Basically you grow in a 4'x4' bed filled with 1/3rd compost, 1/3rd peat moss, and 1/3rd vermiculite. You make enough to fill the bed six inches high and section the bed off with a square foot grid. You can plant veggies really close together without fertilizer. One tomatoes plant only requires a single sq ft of soil. Same with watermelons and cucumbers. The roots don't tangle but they do fight for resources. However a sq ft seems to be enough for anything short of a tree. I've grown carrots, peas, broccoli, lettuce, strawberries, corn, as well as indicas, sativas, and auto flowers all side by side in my garden.

What i can tell you from my own first hand expierence , is that cannabis can grow extremely well when crammed together, but it will grow bigger and yield more when it has more space.

Autos average around 2ft tall, Indicas average about 5ft, and Sativas get 15+ ft. which is basically a tree. One sq ft of soil is equal to roughly seven gallons of soil.

If your growing sativas and want a big yield, go with a min of 3 sq ft. and space them 10'-12' apart. Humbolt Local, who was featured in High Times and on Jorge Cervantes grow dvds plants on 12' centers which is aprox 200 gallons of soil and his plants are monsters.

Now I don't know where your growing but if your in the US, its a little late to start growing. You usually want to start in jan or feb in the green house then transplant outside in march or april at the latest. That is if your looking to grow monsters.

Here is my single sativa almost ~2 weeks. I have another 3 sativas being grown (cant upload a pic r/ now because they are in dark cycle for another 2 hours) in a clear bowl about ~2x the size of the one shown here. Obviously I will be transplanting both this seedling, as well as my other three eventually to bigger pots. Now, I know many people would wonder "why does he have 3 other sativas in one bowl? Its a long story, and not intentional. In one sentence, this is how it came to be - "they came from outdoors, needed to be moved indoors, and I did not want to damage the root structure - so I cut around the three plants that were outside, and cut deep under, then placed them in a bowl with the big chunk of dirt holding all 3 together on the bottom." Thats how the three ended up in a bowl cause I figured Id lose em all tryin to seperate them pulling roots apart and shit..The three in the bowl are about ~4 inches taller than this single seedling, with each of the three having more leaves than this seedling here. My plan is in about 2~3 days, transplanting the three into a 5+ gallon and not seperating them. A pic on the three will come soon. Obviously I will transplant the single seedling eventually to a larger grow medium...any recommendation on size of the growing medium for the 3? Or my single seedling shown here? Any help is always appreciated(I am also contemplating going to a 24hour light cycle on my plants during the next month of veg stage, what do you think?) The flourescent shown on my single seedling here is a 30W "Cool White" FYI

I wouldn't keep them together, since they'll compete with each other. Basically one will become dominate and two will become weaklings. If you managed to transplant all three into a single container, you could probably flood the container with lots of water, creating a thin mud, and gently separate them. You could also wait until one shows up as the clear dominate plant and kill the other two.

I think 3 gallons for a Sativa is pretty small, unless you don't mind tiny plants. You'd do a lot better in a larger 15+ gallon container. If you grow outside, look into making a raised bed either out of lumber, rocks, bricks, or even a kiddy pool. The medium sized plastic kiddy pools cost about $16 and hold aprox 100 gallons of soil. If you stay away from hydroponic shops and get your potting soil locally, you should be able to fill each bed or kiddy pool for around $25-$30. Just remember to think about drainage. Either drill lots of holes or add a layer of rocks, so the roots don't stay submerged in a pool of water if you go the kiddy pool route.

Last thing I'll point out is your single plant in your last post. That plant is very lanky and is trying it's hardest to find light. Repot it in a larger container asap and get more light on it. I start my seedlings under 200W CFL and it gives me a month of veg growth. Any longer then that and i need more light. Your 30W light will be good for a week at best.

I know I know its bad - but not intentional - they are a transplant disaster and i wont let them go im going to keep fighting for them because i know theyd do the same for me

1. regular dirt works, i dont know who told you it doesnt. it can be full of aphids and things you dont necessarily want but it will work.

2.companion growing can be beneficial varying on what plant you want to dominate the area, if you try to grow weed plants by a bunch of gigantic trees they may have some trouble finding roots, the closer you are to the trees the worse. but roots do hold beneficial bacteria, plants share them when the grow together.

3.there is plenty of ways our soil is "aerated", earth worms make tunnels and break root endings as do many other bugs. they eat away at the roots but the plant will grow multiple roots replacing the ones lost.

thanks for the help everyone, as for totally being in controll of 100% in a growing situation indoors, this is my first time- im doin bang up job eh? =p

i didnt cite/source anything i read, i know it helps to cite your sources especially on forums, but thats why I talked about this earlier..i was on a train of thought eyes swoll red so im sorry if my run-on fragmented sentences made no sense, but what im referring to is the statement = "
In the next sentences when I say *Many people say* it simply means this is the majority opion in my opinion of the readings I have done on sites such as *Rollitup"

the little seedling is doin better, got her (hopefully a her! its bagseed m/fers) on a 45WATT CFL light now instead of the 30WATT posted in my picture. It is alot brighter and the little seedling is already angling towards it, so everyone wish me luck.I did not sleep tonight doing everything I can to make sure these little miracles of nature survive, I wont let em go...im off to sleep for a bit now Im 99% sure I have the situation stabilized...again thanks all

This thread is weird. You wrote so much to ask some simple questions that in my opinion were more or less common sence and then you post a picture of that poor little plant. Good day professor.
