An odd predicament. All opinions appreciated.

Sorry if this question has been answered but after some frustrating searching (without being able to put it into words well) I could not find an answer.

The situation: I carefully labeled and cloned my 12 plants (currently 52 days since I soaked the seeds) into simple solo cups filled with plain water with intent of flowering unrooted clones to determine plant gender. After 10 or so days, I can clearly see pollen sacs on a specific clone, but as I went to toss the original plant I noticed obvious (albeit small) female preflowers. While I am not an experienced grower, I do know the difference between stipules and calyx+dual pistils. I'm thinking the problem could be stress related intersexing from the clones randomly recieving almost 36 hours of constant light due to a timer failure on the 3rd day (promptly replaced). But, I still find it somewhat bizzare. I was extremely careful in labeling, yet the clone appears to be fully male, and the original exhibits absolutely no signs of being male. In addition, the plant in question is a good deal taller with lengthier internodal spacing than the garden average, which I've heard is indicative of male plants. I'm not terribly worried about losing a female if I must, since I plan on cutting the number of plants down from 12 to 5-7, but I would like to get some opinions on what to do. Better safe than sorry? More likely to herm on me? Idk, I'd just hate to ditch a beautiful girl and end up with over half males or something. Thank you for your time. :???:

TL;DR Cloned for sex, clone shows multiple pollen sacs while original shows nothing but female preflowers.

Hmm, yeah I'm no expert either but I thought hermies started with female pre-flowers, but I'm sure it can work the other way.

I think you might be right about the stress-- sounded like a great idea at first to (to determine gender), but there might be too many stress variables to be able to tell if they are females, males or hermies

Thank you for your reply. Yeah I know, it's driving me nuts. The very top of the plant actually looks like it has some white hairs forming (could just be due to drowning for almost two weeks idk, dying off maybe?) but on the nodes/stipules all I see are pollen sacs. Probably going to just toss it for safety, but maybe someone has had a similar experience and will advise against that. That timer screw up really defeated the whole point of cloning for sex =[.

Dude, some pictures could really help in diagnosis. Are you certain that they aren't just calyxs that are bulking up for the flowering period? It seems unlikely that one clone would experience enough stress to hermie on you while all of its exact genetic sisters wouldn't, when all underwent the same lighting issue. Post a pic or pm me one. Is the motherplant from a feminized seed, a regular seed, or a clone herself?

Sadly, I have no camera and I either lost my phone or someone stole it. I know it's almost neccessary, but that's how it goes I guess =[. But the seeds are from a friends slightly seeded bud from a nirvana blackberry grow. So definitely not terribly legit, but at least I know what they are. Also, all 12 plants are from seed if I didn't make that clear. But I'm almost certain they are male preflowers because they are in bundles, pop right off, and kinda break open into little crab legs or w/e when squeezed. They're still small but fairly identifiable. They were/are extremely stressed though, light variation/plain water/flowering/becoming a cutting all within 3 days.

I'm gonna see if I can find this phone again.

My buddies buddy tried his hand at growing and made 10 clones. He was amazed how well and fast they were growing and at this point I knew what was up. Turned out he cloned a male. Bahahaha. Sorry, I know it doesnt pertain to your question (s) but made me think... lol

Lucky for him it turned out to be a smelly, highly frosty and squat male.

Blegh.. I gotta go get a camera soon. Whack. Anyways, after staring at the plant for like a half hour I decided I'm going to keep it unless I have 7+ other identifiable females. Gonna transplant into these like 5ish gallon tidy cat containers soon as well, these babies are definitely getting rootbound bad. Anyone know off the dome how many gallons of coco per 2.5cu ft? Gonna go google it some more and see if I can't find an answer myself.

For future reference, you don't ever want to grow seeds from a plant that hermied BC they will carry the same non-stress tolerant genes. That's possibly (probably) another reason why these might have hermied.

And I've also heard 7.5 gallons in 1 cubic foot of bagged soil, not sure how close coco translates but its probably something similar.

Another piece of info you might find useful not all females that seed are hermaphrodites. Hermaphrodites will have both male and female sex organs all over, while the other form (can't remember the name right now but it sounds nothing like hermaphrodite) will have mostly female flowers with sporadic male flowers on certain branches. Not sure if that will help or not, but I'm passing it on anyways. Alienwidow thinks I "flap my jabber" too much :)

That's a good point, I appreciate the advice. Another valid reason to pull this one anyways, even if the "mother" isn't showing signs of stress. And for the record I think he just pulled males a little late, but honestly I have no way to be sure. I'm just gonna give em a few more days I suppose, the only thing is I expected them to be sexed in like 3-5 days because of the long(ish) veg time, and my cheap ass doesn't want to "waste" money on extra pots and coco for plants that will be trashed days later. Probably would be a good idea but I'm on a hella limited budget, finally got a 1kw hps and the spare change to pay my overpriced local shop for some floranova bloom and coco. Haven't even gotten a single legitimate pot yet =[. Oh well, I'll do some trading when everything is said and done and do a little upgrading. That is if I don't kill the girls first =P

Awesome, yeah I'm sure they're the same or close. Is the other term intersex? I didn't know there were variations. Any info helps, if not only to stimulate the mind. I appreciate the replies!

No, it starts with an "m" and its something long and complicated. Its killing me trying to remember it, I'm gonna have to try and hunt that info down BC I'm usually on point with the terms.

But yeah man, I feel ya on the budget. I just got a galaxy 1000w sun select dimmable (also has a turbo setting 8) ), a digimax bulb, a magnum xxxl hood and a 2x4 tent. I got it from my local store but dude has been hooking me up lately so I got it all for around $600. It kind of sucked tho BC I tried saving money in my veg room with all this diy stuff and I should've just gotten all this equipment from the get go.

But I heard that things like blue spectrum can help influence plants into being female...it didn't make any sense to me BC I thought all of that stuff was determined by the chromosomes.

But my plants just showed sex today and 7/8 of my bag seed were female. I'm super stoked, hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to tell if my last one is female. But someone made a post about certain conditions, and how they can influence plants into being female. Like I said, sounds crazy but the conditions were all similar to mine and I've wound up killing it in terms of lucking up with females.

But my plants are a little stressed from switching from the metal halide to the hps, so I'm hoping they get their vigor back before it causes hermies.

Wow that's an awesome rate! Gratz! Hopefully you get all 8 man. Yeah that sounds a little wierd to me too but hey, can't say I know for sure. I'm sure your babies are gonna harden off quick and easy, hopefully at least. Wow, 1kw in a 2 x 4 is nutty, and that magnumxxxl probably fills the whole tent haha! (envyy) My closet I'm using for veg is 2 x 6 and I feel like that is tight. I'm sure you're gonna pull monsters though.

Well I am extremely fresh at this but keep he/she for an experiment of sorts. Just separate her/him from the rest of the pack.
