MANSFIELD — State police on Friday announced an uncommon drug bust: a woman and her three sons accused of growing "magic mushrooms" in their home.
Judy Richard, 48, and sons Benjamin, 22, Justin, 28, and Brandon, 17, were arrested Thursday night at 1901 Storrs Road. The four — who face numerous charges of drug cultivation and possession — appeared in Rockville Superior Court Friday and were released after posting bail.
Glastonbury police and state troopers had gone to the home Thursday at about 9 p.m. to serve a non-drug related search warrant, according to a prosecutor's report. In an upstairs room, however, police found many Rubbermaid bins containing mushroom spores — the first stage in the cultivation of hallucinogenic mushrooms. They also found glass canning jars filled with water, brown rice powder and vermiculite. Spores from stage one were injected into this mixture, police said.
Along with marijuana plants in various stages of cultivation, police said they also seized a plastic bag containing full-grown hallucinogenic mushrooms and a food dehydrator containing one mushroom "ready for consumption."
The Richard family, police say, was producing mind-bending hallucinogens that are in the same class of illegal drugs as LSD and Ecstasy. Called "caps" and "'shrooms," among other names, these fungi contain psychedelic compounds that bring euphoria and feelings of higher perception to some users, while others experience intense paranoia and anxiety.
While magic mushrooms have been used for centuries and have been part of the illicit drug trade in the U.S. since the 1960s, police say they don't see many people using or selling them in Connecticut.
"When I was in the drug unit, I think I came across it once in three years," said Manchester Det. Jeffrey Lampson, who worked on a regional narcotics team from 2003-06. "Every now and then you'll hear about a seizure. I don't think it's as prevalent as the other drugs that we commonly hear about all the time."
The "extensive nature" of the cultivation of both mushrooms and marijuana was consistent with a for-profit operation, police said, and all four were charged with operating a drug factory. None of the accused made any statements or claimed ownership of any of the items seized, according to the prosecutor's report.
A Glastonbury police representative could not be reached about the original target of the search warrant.
Judy, Benjamin and Justin Richard are due to appear in Rockville Superior Court again on April 6. Court information on Brandon Richard was not available because the court considers him a youthful offender.'

There's always a cunning, well thought out post (can ya sense the sarcasm?) like this on these forums... but what you fail to realize there good sir is that it is not the 'pigs' who made these laws, it is the people you and your fellow statesmen elected.

The 'pigs' were doing their job and by the looks of it, a good one... though I may not agree with it... I cannot bash them for it.

True I guess but I'm just pro grow and anti cop so I could never say that growing shrooms or weed is a bad thing just because you did not pick it yourself in the wild.

I dont understand. Shrooms grow in the hot rainy season and they grow on top of the patty so there is no need to flip them.
