another newbie, please help

before you read this, we've been going on an extra low college student budget, and this is our first time trying to grow. We fu**ed up off the bat by not using fox farm soil, then we realized we had been using the wrong type of CFL bulb for the first two weeks.

We started off using two 42w/150w equivalent CFL's, 2700k, rather than using a higher, 6000k bulb. Now, our plants are a little bit older than 2 weeks and we just switched to two 26w/100w equivalent 6000k CFLs.

Our set up is in an approx. 1' by 2' cardboard box, the inside is coated with white posterboard, there are holes cut in the sides for venthilation and there is a small fan circulating air at the bottom. There is a photo of the whole set up, and both plants.

Our question is, how would we go about switching the plants into the fox farm soil? Should we wait until they get bigger or do it immediately?

Also, were considering trying to up our budget and go to a local hydroponic store and buying around a $100 set up, any opinions or suggestions on what equipment we should buy, and how these plants are looking so far? help some newbs out

if your on a budget and you want to go hydro then build it yourself. You will save a ton of money building the setup yourself and its not that complicated to build a DWC or a bubbleponics system.

if you get fox farm be careful because of the nutes that are in there. you don't want to burn them by using more then nec. what kind of soil are they in? i use pro-mix premium. it's freakn awesome. it's like 15-19 for a bag i think 2 cu ft? it's plenty to get you started. you can do it on a budget my fellow 'Noles. i have a thread called take 2, i used cfls on a tight budget for a while. you can get some dank buds with some decent bagseed, soil, and some simple nutes from home depot. i use a 600watt now and but now i have a little more money. i still use schultzs african violet formula house plant food and i clone using hot water, every once in a while some super thrive.

oh yeah, lose the reflector on the cfls and put the bulbs like an inch from the plants. idk now with a second look they could be almost dead. i hope not but don't let it get too hot and dry in that box.

We are considering trying a DWC system using CFL bulbs. Considering setting up two 3.5 gallon buckets, basically the same set up as shown here: https://www.rollitup.org/dwc-bubbleponics/468072-how-dwc.html . I know I will need the buckets, a net pot, an air pump, a ph meter, air stones, rockwool, hydroton, and nutrients.

My question is, do I need to place the bucket/buckets inside a rez (a rubbermaid tub or something like it)? If I do this and change the water enough in the bucket will I need a rez?

Thinking about setting up the buckets under about 4, 26w/100w equivalent, 6000k bulbs for vegging. The buckets would be surrounded by white posterboard for reflection (or coated in mylar?) with fans. Any help/suggestions are appreciated, thanks

Complete a successful grow before spending all that money, time and effort on a hydro system, keep your lights about 2 inches away 1 inch will burn, mine did, keep your plants in the cups until they are about as tall as the cups, then transplant into ff soil.

hydroton 15-20
eco4 pump and hose 30
GH floro nitrients an netpots an airstones 35
If you shop around u can do much cheaper, but you can't beat dwc for ease and frugality

You really dont need a rez for DWC because each bucket acts as its own rez. My bubbleponics system has its own rez built in kind of. Ive got 6 plants in my bubbleponics system and gonna take 2 plants out and use em as my mothers. Check out my page for pics on my system if your interested. but no for DWC you dont need a rez for your system just get 2 five gallon buckets if you have two plants and add nutes as needed. Normally you should change out your water and your nutes on a weekly basis.

I have an 18 gallon tote with 6 plants in it and it is too small. I need to move two of my plants out into their own system (two DWC 5 gallon buckets) and this is just after 3 weeks. If you only have two plants a tote may be ok but I recommend using two 5 gallon buckets. Its always better to separate your plants if you can.

As far as strains go do some research on your local area. Depending on what part of the world your in will greatly affect your crop if the wrong strain is chosen. Also most strains require allot of sunlight to reach full potential. When growing in the woods be warry of the elements. To many tall trees will cause your plants to flower early. Do be cautious of forest animals as well...deer love marijuana! And will ravish your plants before they can grow. You might want to think about a barrier like chicken wire, or quite possibly a more natural approach like human hair.
