Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I think it really depends on what you have. For instance, I just started using molasses. Great, huh? We always have it, hell, I love to eat it. So do ants. Where are my big, ass-kicking ants, the red and black ones that I see out front? They're not in the back, but the little bitty fuckers are, eating on my molasses! I spray them with water, but it doesn't phase them, they just fucking hang on, then get back to work. Fuck! Boric acid or some such like that is supposed to be very effective, but it can get really breezy back there, so it might just blow right off. 
All I need are a few red or black ass-kicking ants, just enough to scare the ant-pants off the bitty ants, and then I'd be golden!

Cayanne pepper powder around the plants. (even your house!) Bugs don't like their little feet to be chemically burned.

Mix it up with a little veggy oil or soap. It will stick. Or just use hot sauce.That will blow away (probably right into my eyes, I've already had one run in with Cayenne during my lifetime, I don't need another to remind me).F'ing ants.

). But, when I was young I had a bad run in specifically with Cayenne. She was wiley, she was. See, I'd seen a show about Indian cooking and how they put many of their spices into a heavy pan to roast, bring out the flavors and such, right? Yeah, so I thought, with my bottle of Cayenne, Hey...! Yeah, so.. I ended up fumigating our apartment with fumes that drove us AND the neighbors above us out of our homes.
It was awful, tears, snot, the scorching in our eyes, ears, noses and throats. Never did that again!

It's not green, it actually looks like Guinness (I'm working on building that creamy head).
So, check it out, a small amount of boric acid mixed with sugar, or honey or syrup or just about anything sweet, will be eaten by the ants and taken back to the colony. Diatomaceous earth may be another effective control (depending on how windy your area gets, of course), can be sprinkled directly onto the plant.
