I think the highway department liked them because they seemed to last forever. They predate fluorescent don't they? I did actually research one type at some point and I want to say they should go for over 100,000 hours.

You ever use them? Curious if the light penetration was better because of less heat output?
Not personally, only saw one in person once at the hydro store.
