Having been a single father of 2 boys for the last 10 years (parents on the east coast) I was surprised at how many actual single fathers there are - not in name only. There is an interesting paper written by Institute for Research on Poverty/University Wisconsin-Madison called
Myths About Custodial Fathers that states
Among the myths that Meyer and Garasky dispel are
the following: (1) custodial fathers always have high in-
comes; (2) there are not many custodial fathers; (3) most
custodial fathers have remarried; (4) most custodial fathers
are widowers, and all were married at some time; and (5)
custodial fathers primarily receive custody of older boys.

Things are - and have been changing
