I did do a quick search on the Plasma lights also but only found 1 distributor and that was on eBay and it was over 2k I believe and the bulb life is shorter, about 30k hours vs 50k for the leds. Also with just a little practice soldering you can replace the individual leds when they burn out, the plasma light has to be sent back to the factory and this can only be done 3 times before you have to replace the whole unit.

Just imagine though within another 5 years LED panels should drop in price by quite a bit making them much more viable for larger grows.

Seaghost- Yeah, plasma llights are cutting edge, I guess. Mysterious tech, to me. Do they run as cool as LEDs?

You make a good point about the price of LEDs dropping soon. It's one reason I'm holding off taking a big plunge. But now it looks more and more feasible to make one, I'm really jazzed by that notion.

For a cool one plant box, you could take a caninet like this


line the walls and upper shelf with LEDs. Grow a single plant, maybe using Uncle Ben's topping technique, or grow autos, even a mini scrog...and have a bitchen micro gro situation that looks inconspicuous.

When space is tight, I think this might be ideal.

viagro- thats exactly the idea i had in mind, that wahy you COULD grow one medium bushy and heavy yielding plant using just leds, bitchin idea!

LED grow lights came on the market a few years ago to the tune of rejection and controversy. How can they possibly compare to the HID grow light standard and are they able to produce the same results as outlined in all the hype? By doing my homework and some basic comparison, I found that the best LED grow lights are more than capable of outperforming the standard.

australias- yeah thats what ive been trying to say, you can say that a plant 'only' needs red and blue spectrums for development and growth but thats simplifying things a little too much, both red and blue spectrums can be broken down into at least thee seperate spectrums each that can be finetuned in strength and intensity to suit each plant at each stage of the growth cycle so by simply splitting red and blue up into each individual range and using the right powered led bulbs i have effectively already DOUBLED or TRIPLED the 'true full spectrum' that most other lights claim to have, they provide BROAD spectrum, im looking to provide narrow spectrums so each one can be finetuned for light saturation withou causing any damage or overload to the plant. and by inserting the remaining spectrums for a TRUE FULL SPECTRUM light (10-11 in total) then it will in essence be the ultimate all in one light for small operations, no heat, fans, ducting, coll tubes etc. think about it, there are some spectrums that you would WANT your plants to have, they are provided by the sun after all... just not in the same large intensities as say the red, blue or even orange/yellow hughes, you might want blue 80% red 35% orange 6% white 2% etc etc, this light will allow you to do that without switching bulbs or complete lighting setups and this light will still provide superior spectrum control than any i have found yet, while also being extremely compact, cool and cheap to run! true it might be caveman style knobs instead of a usb link to your pc to control your panel... more shit to break i say, build it simple and tough

With the exception of the haight and lightblaze I think they are all made in China. I've been reading this thread since it started. I have been researching LED for almost 11 months now. To date the best LED's I've seen are the growled's from LEDgirl on THCfarmer and http://www.hydroponicshut.com/pro-grow-led-grow-lights.html. These are the best specced and priced units I have found out there. Take this with a pinch of slat as I have not tried these personally, only seen grow journals to provide evidence. LED requires a different approach to growing than HID.

newworldorder, those progrow 180's, could they be used for 4-6 mini lst'd plants? (max 10 inches) throughtout the whole grow with good results?

whats your beef with the uv light the the lighthouse models put out its supposed to help with mold and pests right? Well my blackstar 240w 6 band panel is comin tomorrow ill let you guys know how it works for a 40inch long by 6 inch deep by 2 feet wide SOG table i may end up running two of these panels in there but for now start with one til christmas

i have seen some awsome plants grown with LED's, but they also had a few spiral CFL's on the side

if ya don't mind me askin, where U getting it. cause i got one set n had to send back cause it was smaller then what the picture show. is ur's like a box type 1 1/2 inch by 12x12 cause i hear those kind really work good, cause U can get them really close to plant n not worry about the plants getting hot. of course most of the time, of what i have seen , they always had a fewCFL's on the sides.
of course im lookin for a setup like that also

How long is a piece of string???? This depends on your growing skill, the environment you create and your genetic so maybe, I dont know and only time will tell.

well i was going to start with one plant of course for my first grow, good genetic stock from seed either destroyer or blz bud. would be a larger plant than the lst'd ones is end up with later, want to mess with it as little as possible the first time round, will be my baby lol.
i have assisted grows before, built setups and achieved pretty reasonable results, never really handled it in person, just shared my knowledge but this will be my first grow per se.
i just figured 3 full size plants would need a similar footprint as perhaps 6 much smaller plants only a few inches high cob style and they would need less light penetration? dunno ill have to try and see might buy one, they pretty cheap, grow with it, review the results and then pull it apart, see whats in its guts and use those ideas towards my design lol

Yeah good luck with that, they are some very well trained plants. I suggest you do a grow journal that way people will follow you and lend a hand as needs fit. You will certainly need all the help you can get if you want your first grow to succeed that well. It is always good to want to do well straight off the bat but don't be disheartened if at first your results are mediocre. I think most people here start that way.

PS. LED lights......IMO you are better off buying a good spec unit then trying to build it for the money you have been stating, I have 14 years as a commercial industrial designer and can tell you right now you will not make a unit that will compare. The casing alone will set you back $200. Fabrication does not come cheap my friend.

The pro grow I showed you are awesome, and very well priced. They have a 3 yr. warranty, use cree led's and have switchable veg/flower switches. Good spectrum choice + UV. If you want to do 3-4 small plants you may as well go with the 250W. It would POP them plants, make the tent quivver!! You may well get them like Hobbes...maybe?!

lol this isnt my first rodeo, i have about 10 years of hardcore bonsai growing behind me and have been around mj grows enough, we pretty much copied hobbes set up on a smaller scale with cfls and trained the plant (only one in a MUCH larger pot) to begin with and we did pretty well i think, ill post pics up when he comes over on the weekend. i might go the 250, but id want it to be pretty damn good for the same price as a good quality cmh setup that i will know how to expect it to perform lol what do you think?
and i know fabricstion aint easy but when your brother in law is one of adelaides best tig welders i feel pretty confident hes got the bits at his place and can throw me one together that looks pretty sweet i have looked at every aspect of this, definately not flying blind if ya know what i mean

If you wanted to go HID I would go HPS, thats my opinion but others may differ. But for a few plants the 250W would defenitly work very well. The top ones i feel only come into question when you are trying to flower large bushes and cover plenty space but a scrog or lst of sorts would do nicely on a few plants and you would save leccie costs in the long run. You know the benefits.
