i'll be honest I saw a bunch of videos already and after the 3rd video I was like is this it ? its cake that's what made me wanna make one from scratch but I think buying a kit seeing if I really like it then maybe doing one from scratch ...i'm all pumped cause all I read is QB QB and more QB and how good they are i'm like i'm getting some and I really may not even like them lol so I need to slow down like the wife says or it may end up in a pile someplace like alotta other shit I thought I wanted that I really didn't ...the wife has always told me since she met me I have no moderation with buying stuff that I get into and when its played out I have a ton of money wrapped up and i'm on to my next kick lol
Most of the kits are just packages of the same parts you can source yourself. Between boards, strips, and cobs there are a lot of different things you can get into to get good LED. Boards just make this a little bit easier to plan out and put together imo but if you dont want china parts there are cheaper ways to DIY.
imo the hardest parts of diy without a kit are driver selection (with figuring out how many boards to run in what setup with which driver) and figuring out some kind of frame to hang them. Most of the actual assembly is very straight forward.
I tend to be the same way. I dove all in on my setup over a year ago now and have not regretted it, but yeah 2500-3k is a big chunk to drop all at once. Nothing wrong with starting with a smaller setup to test the waters.
Ive spent nearly 8k total in my grow with all the little stuff and changes ive made, but as far as im concerned it paid for itself in 2 grows.

here's one room with 3 units. there are another 3 units like these and 3 more which are COBs. lights are 15 x samsung qb22a strips mounted on 25x25 aluminium extrusion wired in parallell driven by a meanwell hlg600h-48a. I only drive them at 12.3 amps which makes 568 watts. they stay cool to the touch with the circulation fans blowing across them. Room never goes over 24C even in summer.
love it, really want to play with some strips to do some side lighting next.

I spent around $1400 on his setup I use over a 6x10 area.
The prices I paid for meijiu board from alibaba at the time were slightly less than HLGv1 boards cost right now. (around $24 per board IIRC)
You want at least 30w per square foot. I would not attempt to light the whole 10x15 unless you can afford to put a minimum of 4500w over it.
At 140w each for the V1 boards, youd need at least 32 of them at $30 a piece. Plus heatsinks drivers frames ect.Another example would be the HLG kits. You need 17 260w kits at $350 each. A 260w china kit is just a little over $100 now.

Thanks! its done well for me so far.
Considering switching some things around and adding another driver though.
Same here, I have no complaints so far! And I’m with you, already planning to add 3 more boards and some UV T5’s lol. Don’t mind the slight Mag lockout on the left, it’s on the mend. Day 20

Im running mine fairly low right now. They run up to nearly 140w and only running them at 80w
I wanted to try out the low and close approach with the best spr. Seems to be working out well.
I have room to add up to another 800w without getting more boards. I have to do a whole different driver setup though.

I feel you, that’s why I wanna add three more boards while still keeping the three hlg240’s. One 240 for each trio of boards. For the strain I’m running at the moment they seem to be very happy at 18”. Any closer and I get some cupping. Outer boards are at 100w two centres at 70w.

Im really considering doing something similar. If I drop a board off each run and pick up 2 more 240-2100s i can run the 4 center ones up to 120w and all the outside 12 at 105w
