well guys, i know i should be vegging with cfl's or metal halide but my MH conversion bulb shatter'd 3 nights ago, and i don't got $50 lying around so i'm using my flower light to veg.
i have 6 seedlings ( 3 White widow / 3 AK48 ) they about 3 days old and i'm already noticing some stretching. I got my light at 32 inchs away at the moment. How close can i get my 400 watt hps in w/o burning my 3 day old sprouts and to stop the stretching, anyone having experience with vegging 400 watt HPS ???

HPS lights are not quite as hot as MH or equivalent CFL try to get the light closer. I have vegged under my 400 HPS and they do seem to stretch a bit , but it will work pretty well. Can you add some supplemental flouros to the mix? If so get some in a more traditional vegging temp of 6500k or so and that should help some with the stretching. These ideas are what I have tried and they worked for me.

i did a complete grow start to finish on a 600 hps,
was my first grow and will be doing it again this time too.
check my posts to see how it turned out.
as for distance, if its uncomfortable for your hand then its too close,

dont worry about it, just use LST, and you have no prb's, but you will get a little bit of stretching at the start.

I veg with 2 x 400w HPS. They are the only bulbs that fit in my air cooled reflectors. I have vegged with both MH and HPS, and I honestly don't notice much of a difference.

i veg with a hps and it seems like they get bushier vegged with a hps rather then a mh..that whole talk about vegging with a mh is better is bullshit it actually has less lumens then a hps

mh is a waste these days. all ive ever used is dual spec hps all way through my grows.
400 is only good for 18 inch ...600 is 22 inch and 1k is 24 inches. anymore and lumens drop to 50%. so is a waste to have em that far away. if its to hot need better venting or sealed hoods if not.

mh is a better colour but it also is less lumens and dies off faster than the others.

thanks for all the replies guys, it's reassuring to know you guys have success with a hps throughout the whole grow cycle. i guess the first 2 weeks aren't really ideal for a HID and might cause a little stretching as in my case. But im sure after 2 weeks they will love the HID.

I don't bother with cfl's. I keep my plants under HID for their entire life - just start them off to the side, and not directly under lights to start. If you are worried about the extra power consumption, go with cfl's - but otherwise go with more light. I've found that generally more light is better.

As a side note, cfl's give off strange frequencies that supposedly fuck with us. I'm not kidding, and yes - I know I'm paranoid.
