Arctic 11 plus without fan

Thanks for the 3590 bit in there.

Well hopefully the Amazon price comes down as well then.

But seriously, $14 to ship a little light weight $3 fan?
 
what heat sinks do you all recommend to run some cxb3590's?? would be really nice to get something pre-drilled and save me a bunch of time :blsmoke:

Active or passive cooling?

Ah. The arctic alpine 11 plus has holes in the corners. So if the price goes back down with new stock should be good.

I suppose it depends on how hard you plan to run the led though
 
The Artic Alpine 11 Plus is rated for ~100W but has no problem running as high as 125W with reliable power feeding it's fan and a proper thickness of TIM between a COB and the heat sink.

The Vero 18 and 29 COBs can be mounted onto the AA11P with the addition of optic accessories to further enhance output.

All in all the AA11P is one helluva fan/heatsink combination, one that has yet to be beaten by the others in regards to pricing, reliability, and practicality.
 
The Alpine is cheap for sure, but it is not really reliable. It only features fluid bearing and will most likely be the first part of a Bridgelux/Cree-Meanwell-Arctic combo to fail. Chances are quite high you will encounter an Arctic that has a rotational imbalance straight out of the box. I agree it has a very good form factor though. I still wouldn't ever put more than 25W of heat on it.

Quick froogling tells me they are still sold under 7€ in europe.

Is that the 11 plus or a different one? Right now the 11 plus all seem to be out of stock

I have never had a computer fan fail in over 15 years....sure I have replaced them, but outright failure? ..PC fan's are probably last on that list....

I would say the Caps in the driver are probably the 1st bottleneck...not the fan.

I have also ran mine for nearly a year 365, @40 watts with only 5v's cooling...They are cold to the touch most of the time....
 
Thanks. It was posted that arctic should be getting stock shortly. Hopefully that trickles out to other places and prices go back down

Well, I now use (10) Arctic, one of which has failed but is still grilled by the V29 at 1050mA underneath. The others are kept cool by 5V, at differing RPM and noise levels though. I am blowing on it with the circulation fan, which puts the baseplate at roughly 40-70°. No visible light degration so far, but everything is illuminated very well anyways. I am planning to fix it but I am lazy these days and somewhat curious if the egg will fry. I might add that running the Vero at 500mA keeps the heatsink very cool without the fan(s).

I chose the Arctic because they are cheap and because of the form factor. I have also retrofitted LED floodlights with V18, which is also cheap. They get warm, but it's ok. Downside is the bulky case. I was researching for water cooling a lot but turned the idea down since it's too expensive and has even more weak spots. My next build will most likely feature a semi-passive setup similar to the designs many of you guys here did so well.
 
The only reason I leaned to pc heatsink is that I get free shipping on Amazon. Shipping from heatsink usa gets expensive.
 
From my understanding, fluid dynamic bearings in these PC fans are rated for 50,000+ hours of continuous operation. Usually much more.
