Arctic F14 140mm Fan

Has anyone got any experience with using these and an ACDC transformer?

I bought two of them and tried to splice one of them tonight just to test it and it does nothing.

I've read that these particular fans have some weird controller actually in the fan which doesn't allow it to run without the sensors attached. This sounds like b/s though considering how many people attach PWM fans directly to their computer PSU and run them at full RPMs.

I also tried a LianLI 140mm fan I had lying around and this would start to spin up but never actually get going. It would do it every few seconds. If I get it going by hand it does spin though. Dodgy power supply or what?

It's set to 12v which is what the fans are. I'm not going to spend any more money on transformers or case fans. I'd rather just use something like this http://images.esellerpro.com/53/I/120/77/31533_FAN1A.jpg that I already have a few of. This would be far better anyway right?

Thanks for any advice.

I'm not certain of the fan you're talking about, but I do know computers. Fans with the small plug that goes into the motherboard either have 3 or 4 pins. The fans with 3 pins cannot be controlled, but the 4 pin can.

I use computer fans to blow on my plants (120mm) and cool my veg cabinet. I used old computer power-supplies to power them, and they run at full-tilt (the fans I use have the molex 4 pin plug...not to be confused with the 4 pin plug that goes into a mother board).

It's my guess that your AC/DC power supply is in question if the fan spins, but does not spin quickly.

I just use old cell phone chargers or any old low amp 12v charger. If the amps were to high you may have blown that fan.

I dont believe it matters what amperage it is, the fan will just take what it needs. the adaptors arent constant current?

You can use other voltage phone chargers too. i.e 6V for half speed, ofcourse there is a point where the fan just won't spin up

pretty sure the amperage doesnt matter as long as its more than the fan requires.

reku.....I just learned something today...thank you.
np that's why we all hang out here!

not sure if its milli amps or amps but one time I made one the fan was .5 milli amp I think and I hooked up a .5 amp charger and it smoked and ceased to work.

Thanks a lot for the info. I was lead to believe the same as Snotboogie though regarding the amperage.

I'm going to assume it's the ACDC adapter. Shame I didn't test it before snipping the connector off lol. Well it was only a couple of quid, probably why it doesn't work.
