Are plants stretching??

I planted 5 germinated NYCD lowryder's on saturday and all growing well.

I am growing under a 300w cfl but before i even got to use it, it smashed!! Posted it back for a replacement on friday but with weekend not expecting it till wednesday - thursday.

I had a choice of either natural window light or some emergancy lower wattage cfl lamps, so i went and got 2 15w cfl lamps from the hardware store.

20/4 light since 6pm sat. Now tuesday and 4 plant stems are roughly the size of my little finger and one the size of my forefinger.

I am pretty sure they are stretching because biggest one in slowly starting to bend at the top. Any input would be great as dont want to get airy buds later on.

Hopefully 300w will be here tomorrow so do i risk one more day under low wattage cfl or leave in a window till the cavalry arrives.
Sorry for waffling :peace:

That is most definitely stretch going on. You will want to do something about that, besides just putting them under the replacement light. Put a small fan, like a typical oscillating fan running on low, in front of the plants. The air causing lateral movement will cause the stem caliper to increase.

The other option is to replant them deeper. If you do plant them deep enough so the lowest leaves are just above the surface of the soil. The stem that is then in the soil will push out new roots and your root system will grow more because of it and with the replacement light the new above soil growth should not have a stretching problem as long as your light is low enough.

The pots im using are not really that big so i will be replanting either tomorrow or thursday. I will get lamps as close as possible and see if that can prolonge stretching with these low watt lights.

If no change i think getting the soil level up to near those leaves is a must, a fan will also be on.

If Replanting how much stem to leave before 1st nova?

Thanks for input guys

It is not critical or anything so you don't have to be precise so a half inch roughly, less is fine too but you just don't want to leave to much stem out or you are still at risk and have defeated the purpose of planting them deeper.

Thanks Brick Top, will get those replanted tonight.

My biggest one that i said was starting to bend slightly now looks like a bonzi as i turned it 180 degrees to try and get it to bend back over!

With a bit more soil it should look normal, just hope i can strenghen those stems up to avoid airy buds
