Are there any fluorescent lights that will not do?

  • Hi
I have 2 x 2' x 16W and 1 x 2.5' x 20w. These bulbs are around 1.5cm diameter, I have the lights mounted side by side. I only have a couple of sprouts or clones under them at a time(2" above the tops).

So far things seem to be going ok, the seedlings seam ok, apart from a little disfiguring on the first set of ragged edge leaves that came through, not the smooth leaves. they also had a slight dark purple edge to them( I used a pocket microscope to look, very small), I was thinking this might be a magnesium deficiency, but I'm definitely open to advice?

When I get a chance I will grab the info from the stickers on the side of the lights and post in here to see if anyone can shed any more light on this(no pun intended). I will also try and use the pocket microscope to take pics of the purple tingeing I was talking about.

thanx in advance for any advice

Firstly, DO NOT FEED THE SEEDLINGS YET, wait a few weeks before you do anything other than pH-ed water and not too much water at that. They are very, very fragile right now. I wouldn't worry about that "purplish" at the edges of the "ragged edge leaves" (those are what they are ALL gonna' be like. The smooth edged ones are the first set from the seed and will fall off on their own; do not remove. Even a part of the seed's shell, do not remove. PATIENCE is the best advice anyone can give and receive. More will be revealed as they grow. Nutrient overdose is one of the biggest mistakes everyone makes. I assume you're in soil? You don't state what medium. Either way, lower wattage CFL's are good, plant-lets don't need or tolerate HID's at this point. Sounds like you're off to a good start...

I agree with all that except the idea that seedlings can't handle HiD lighting...I start all seeds and clones under HiD lighting...it speeds veg no matter the age of the plant...But other than that..if you are going to use CFLs than they are all about the same...just try to get an even spectrum, or more blue for veg and more red for flower...or both blue and red all the time...so 6500k and 2700k...and anything between...but it takes a lot of CFLs to grow a respectably sized plant with a yield that makes it worth the time.

Are you growing in Soil or Hydroponics? Also just curious if you were using any kind of reflective material or just white walls. Keep me updated plz..

I have the nutrient pack from GH general hydroponics. (flora series.) It has a nutrient mix for cuttings and seedlings. I have started using it for about two days under a 96w T5 with 4 2'' bulbs 24w each. I also have a 150Hps that runs during half the cycle of the T5. So 24hrs of T5 cfl and 12hours of HPS. I havn't seens any signs of over feeding, but I really don't want to wait around for it. Should I just empty the solution and put just a Ph lvl water with my superthrive (RS) or do you think it might be fine with my light solution???

thanks for all your info guys..

the area I have set aside is only 14" or so in height. I want to get small seeds/clones to root in this environment. so far only the ceiling of this area is white, I will be sheeting it with black n white, they will go from here to flowering hydro room.

I had a bit of a nightmare yesterday, I posted last night..to save rewriting it all down, please read this...

https://www.rollitup.org/advanced-marijuana-cultivation/555162-help-please-possible-nutrient-burn.html

here is the pssible nutrient burn i am asking about. the leaves feel brittle.. will this re-animate or die ??

thnx

Mine get babied by putting water bottles with the bottoms removed like greenhouses. Lid set on top at night, spray water in the AM lightly and leave at the edge of my 1000 watt HPS throw. They go straight into 3 gallon containers in their Root Shooter plug.

i have set up some small fluo lights around 52w for my babies. When you say lid on , do you mean propagator lid, and I take it you take off the bottle covers?

I have turned old 1.5 litre pop bottles into small wick systems. will post a pic.. just cut the top 3 or 4 " off the top of the bottle. keep the neck attached. get rid of screw off lid. then i cut off the bottom 4 - 5 inches off the bottom of the bottle, throw away the middle unless you can find a use for it(answers on a postcard, I was thinking some kind of dome for wick system). I then take a 3" rockwool cube and stick a pencil down through the centre and stick a wick down the middle of it. this gets placed in the upturned bottle top, the wick goes down the neck. place your water/nutes in the bottom part of the bottle and then the top with 3" rockwool cube and wick should fit snugly into bottom part on top of water/nutes. like i said , will post a pic.
