Are there any ill affects to vegging longer than expected?

This might be a newbe question but please bare with me. Is it bad to veg a plant longer than what is expected when I am still going to flower and produce buds? Obviously you can veg a long time to make a plant a Mother. Just wondering if the bud would lose anything when vegging to long.
 
no man.... its benneficial....the longer you veg... the more bud....... just make sure you have big pots.... 3gal are good for 4 week veg..... you want to go longer than that ,get some 5 gallon pots....
 
There is no expectation when it comes to vegging.... you can veg as little as a week or you can veg literally forever.... people keep mothers when they clone vegging for years.....my ideal veg time is 4 weeks....everybodies differant man....
 
Doubt you can veg too long. The main thing is to take into account the space of the flower room. When put into flower its gonna get at least 2-3 times larger. With that in mind and some experience with each strains growth rates you can better estimate how big to let the plant get in veg.

I have a friend who's been vegging a NL #5 for 6 years in soil.....
 
i vegged for 8 weeks, plants got to 3 feet, in 1 gallon containers. then i transplanted to 3 gal bags and they skyrocketed to over 5ft!! still have about 2-3 weeks left. longer veg=taller plants, more internodes and possibly bigger buds, and/or more buds. and i also have a buddy who used to own a dispensary, says he has 6 mothers, one of them is 10 years old. i haven't seen it, but i could imagine the stock is thick enough to hang a swing from, lol!!!
 
Thanks guys for the knowledge!! So is it safe to expect indicas to double in size and sativa to triple. Or is there really no way to tell until you actually grow the strain.

Wouldn't you have to trim the plant down to size multiple times if you kept a mother for 10 years? Or could that kill or hermie your mother?

Yes, you can veg a plant for too long, but only in the sense that when growing indoors, the size of your plants is regulated by the space in which you have to grow.

Your plants can gain as much as 1.5-2.5 times their vegged height in flower. So you have to be smart, and veg according to the space you have to work with.

I have vegged plants for a few months in soil and pulled several ounces off of each one. I have also gone straight from clone to flower and gotten around 3/4 ounce per plant.

The less plants you grow, the more likely you need to veg for prolonged periods of time. The more plants you grow, the less you can veg them.

It's all about planning and being realistic. :joint:
 
I would say the main drawback to vegging longer, is the need for more light, as they get taller. If you're using a 400 HPS, for example, a plant that finishes much taller than 2', is wasted space, IMO, because the lower budsites won't really produce much useful smoke. Also, as the light becomes less effective, the plants stretch more, making them more prone to falling over under the weight of the buds. Sometimes that's a good problem, but other times it can be a real pain in the ass.lol An exception to the rule, is if you veg longer, and train the plant, to keep the heigth controlled. If you use that etra veg time to make the plant wider and bushier, rather than taller, the extra time is a good thing.
 
There are ill effects if you do not have enough light, pot size, space.. If it is outdoor, I would say bigger is better ! :)
 
Thanks for all the info guys!!! The main reason i brought this up was that i want to grow one plant with the scrog method and fill the entire closet which is 5'x 3'x 6'. This might would take alot longer than a normal veg cycle and i didnt want to waste my time trying it if the bud wouldnt be as potent.
