Are these OK to grow with

Well it is a Phillips metal halide 400w and appears to work but how many hours are on the bulb?

Metal halides only provide optimal plant growth for around 6 months then the spectrum declines fast.

Also it is likely designed for an enclosed in glass fixture as old and faulty metal halide lamps may explode. And are labeled for use in enclosed lamps for safety.

I needed to know this fact recently and found you can reduce the chances of such failure by running only newer bulbs and replacing if any blackening on the glass and or flickering or other signs.

I chose not chancing the open fixture mh idea.

High roof warehouse light ..Mh is good for vegging with marginal results for bud

look for a conversion bulb. (if still around) and can be pricey

imo. trash and go DIY COB

good luck

I agree they scare the shit out of me. (MH) but i have a digital ballast and it will cut power before bulb failure? Also they have fuses they should pop before the bulb? Im asking even thought it soesnt sound like it. I just got my first mh 600w ipower digi. But as far as marginal growth by its ability to produce good buds. It will increase the trich count with out streaching the bud like hps. Ive been told led can produce the same potency as mh\hps ( and from what i read hps is just a diffrent type of metal halide just with sodium added to the chemical reaction that causes them light to have a warmer appearance. This is also untested by me only what i have read. So please dont bash me if my info is a bit off. Again this is my first mh and it still scares the hell outta me i even cut the normal a/c male chord end off and spliced a gfi (groumd fault interrupter) from a chop saw.

I don't think you can rely on either the fuse or ballast cutting off first.

And I grow with Hortilux super HPS which has a better spectrum than a straight HPS but I get tight frosty buds.

I also don't think that a metal halide or conversion bulb is worse. Just that the intensity of the usable plant light determines yield. And MH watt for watt will likely yield less. And I plan to add more blue and maybe uv to the room to see about more trichomes and maybe even psycho activity. It is fast becoming an accepted fact.

I would have no problem with that I power setup you got. It could grow a pound of dank shit if you got the genetics and skills. I would like to see it in action.
