At my wits end popping seeds

I had a bad ass seed collection...nice gear too.
I went to long without germination
an all the seeds were no good...
They wouldn't pop for shit..
Or they would crack the shell an dud out...

I hear you on being a pro at popping seeds
It's the most basic stage of growing...
Yet, you can fuck it up like a newbie if your not steady.

Beware of OLD seeds...
Then you didn't store them correctly. I have beans 15years old + that don't have major issues germinating. Just popped a tga time wreck which i bought sometime around 2010. Maybe one or two here and there won't pop but it's not a reg occurrence. I have thug pug seeds from a buddy that he didn't store right, just in a drawer and I have prob a 50% success rate with but I can still get them going. Nothing wrong with old seeds that are stored correctly.

Can also confirm had stuff in a drawer for more than twenty years that will pop still it's definitely down to storage where I stay is not famous for being warm mind you that might help

Hey bud, what’s your exact method and process for how you’re trying to pop your seeds? Seeds need to stay warm and moist, but not completely water-logged. Its likely that simply you’re overlooking something small along the way.

Are you watering them into the new medium after you transplant them? Are you putting some sort of dome over them to keep humidity and moisture in, or are they lid-off and exposed to the 60-70% ambient humidity? Is the medium drying out after you transplant them from your paper towel?

Too little light is better than too much. You can re-bury stretched seedlings in transplant, and you can always move your light closer a little bit each day until they let you know what they want.
I’ve tried numerous methods but typically I start seeds in a paper towel and transplant them into coco but when I was having issues i started the in seed soil them transplanted to coco in an ebb and flow system. I have heard that some people don’t like switching from soil to coco but it always seemed to work for me. I just need to get past that seedling state. As far as light , I’ve tried numerous different lights and get the same result. I have been know to over water but I got a handle on that as well. I think I need to go to a smaller room where I can control the environment better.

4tube t5 ho fixture 3 inches from the top of the medium worked best for me for years, now I use led tubes I found on Amazon at 8 inches from the top of the medium but there's a million different types of led tube so my results might not be the same as yours.

seed straight into the growing medium, I allways used rock wool cubes but now just put them straight in soil and cover lightly, I feel ur issue is more to do with light distance rather than germination method though
I believe the light is part of the issue as well. I just didn’t think I did anything different over the years and now I’m getting poor results. I moved a few years back and have a much larger grow room. I believe that’s when it started. Perhaps my temps and humidity would be easier controlled in a smaller room.

Try straight into dirt with worm castings in it and a heat mat if required you might have better luck I normally use paper towels unless it's landrace or old seeds in that case straight into dirt works better

I believe my issue is like distance. I’ve used small lights very close and still had stretching and also had my large light 2 feet away and get the same outcome. I think I just need to dial in
do you have a way of measuring ppfd? there are apps and low cost devices that can help you with this... i usually throw my seedlings right into my veg lights at around 100 ppfd and they shouldn't stretch too much... if they do u can use a little stick or wire to help the stem while it can stand on its own
