Attic Growing

I wasn't planning on doing an indoor grow this winter. However, I'm thinking that I might try it to do one. I'm thinking either in my basement or attic, but the problem is both of those places have exposed fiberglass insulation. Would that be a problem? Like will it hurt the plants or worse, me when I go to harvest the plants? I was probably going to use either the Rubbermaid container or Igloo cooler DWC method. I wasn't planning on using some kind of grow box, but I think it might be necessary. Any thoughts?

I dont know much about growing it near fibreglass insulation but i remember there was this grade going round which had been sprayed with fibreglass to make it heavier (ridiculous i know) and my friend didnt know and woke up the next morning with seriously fucked up lungs. He got better obviously, just a horrible feeling. Dont take my word on it though just thought it may be helpful.

imo i would want it to be enclosed area. your circulating fan will blow fine particles all around. just turn on a bright light and brush the insulation and you will see it floating in the air. the cleaner the grow room the better. i wouldnt want all that sticking to my bud. during the veg time its a little less important, but the cleaner it is the better the plants will grow. so keep clean.

I think I'm gonna use daveg1i's grow box (https://www.rollitup.org/do-yourself/51417-diy-4oz-minimum-yield-grow.html). I'll probably just use soil, but I might change my mind and make a DWC system. I'm not sure how possible it will be, but I would like to make an enclosed ventilation system for the whole thing, in order to cut down on possible fiberglass contamination. I haven't been in my attic for year, but I don't feel like going up there today. Maybe I'll check tomorrow and update. If I actually get anything done I'll post some pics.

UPDATE:
I just realized that there will be a few times (namely holidays) that I'll be gone for anywhere from 2 or 3 days to a week. I don't think I'll be able to get anyone to water my plants during that time if I use soil and if I use DWC and something breaks down my plant would probably die. Any advice? I was thinking maybe with soil I could use some water crystals.

i only grow in soil or pro mix so far. depending on how warm it is in your room will help determine how much you need to water and the size of the pots. in the cooler times of the grow i only need to water every few days. i did go away for 4 1/2 days and i was very worried but it was cooler out, so what i did was before i left gave them a good drink, i turned off my mh lamp and turned on my fluoros and lowered them down about 5 inches away. they did stretch a little but i think they used less water with the lower wattage and temps, and they were fine when i got home. there is alot of other threads around here that give some pretty good ideas for watering when going away. maybe a little pump system set up with a 7 day timer and set it to water once after 3 days or as needed.

I'd be gone for Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I might be able to pull it off. Dunno if I have the skill (or money) to set up a timed pump, but that's a good idea.

look into landscaping drip systems thats how i auto water my system. you can set it minimum 1 minute a week or 99 minutes everyday. of course with this you need to have drainage incase of malfunction so this in your attic may not work. unless you could run gutters over to the overhang of your house and let the water run down your house if it would happen to malfunction. i am planning on adding another timer... this would cut the chances of failer in half since both units would have to fail.

I'll look into it. In terms of my original question, I just checked my garage attic and there's no insulation. The problem is it will get much colder. I think I'll line the grow box with emergency blankets to keep heat and light in.

Dont confine youself with a grow box. Home depot sells a reflective flexible insulation you can nail to your walls . It will cover the exposed fiberglass and reflect like mylar. Then yoiu can use the whole space for growing. Go big. Invest in quality eqipment. Read a lot on the subject and you and those around you will doubtlessly benefit.
