OKAY! SO! I threw it back in vac at 106 degrees and this is what it started doing, not sure if this is what im looking for or not.... please advise, thank you hoping this is what waxing is.... this is a 36 g patty

VB it looks like it is on it's way to wax. Keep it going like that and keep it under 110F. I check my oil very, very often. It's that one time you let it slide without checking for awhile where it will fuck up on you. Like a couple guys on the forum have suggested in the past; sand on your griddle is a good way to control temp spikes.

What also has an effect on temp differences during purge is the temp of your environment you are purging in. For example if you are purging in an open shop the temp of your griddle will vary depending on the ambient air temp in your surroundings.
For example. Outside last night was around 45F when I had a purge nearing finishing up. Less than 2 hrs later the outside temp dropped to 28F and I had to turn up the griddle a bit to get it back where I wanted it.
If you are purging inside a house or shop even the ambient temp differences in there as they fluctuate will affect your griddle temp. Only slightly but it's enough to make a difference.

I can understand why some people may not want to use a towel on a griddle for safety reasons. But for me while purging with the griddle on concrete and nothing else around that can catch fire, I sometimes will use a towel to help control temp fluctuations. If the griddle is low enough it won't burn the towel at all. I put a layer of teflon under it too.

This past November?

If so, that's not too bad.... I just posted a pic in the picture thread of some dank ass shatter that was made from cured material that is well into 6 months of curing.

There are some lighter photos a few pages back, and that was harvested in November.
Being stored in garbage bags in the garage...

Not so great, but shit..if he kept it sealed up and it was cold the while time...you might have a hidden treasure.

Get some pics up of material, preferably macro shots.
I can help tell ya if it's worth the effort.

Monitoring temps..

I've posted my setup before but here..
Deep dish griddle filled with sand, nestle chamber into the sand.
Pour more sand in around the sides of the chamber.
Turn griddle knob to warm.
Place digital food thermometer in sand, so it touches the bottom of chamber and sand surface.
^ this temp will read 137-138° F
This translates to an exact temp of 115°F in my chamber.


Hope this helps everybody just starting up..
There is a thick ass layer of sand in between the surface of griddle and bottom of chamber, this creates consistent evenly distributed heat.

Oh..if you do your purging indoors like me..
Get yourself some very small ducting, and duct the exhaust through a window..you really don't want those fumes accumulating in your house and breathing those fumes for the duration of the purge.

I use a garden hose, screws right into the exhaust port of my pump and out the window.

What type of griddle is that ? Is that something that holds the sand or is sand directly on griddle ? Never seen one that deep

Hey VB just wanted to show you something on the 70 gram batch I've been waxing tonight. The first pic as you can see the oil is very flat and motionless and hasn't started to wax yet. This is the shatter state if I wanted to make it shatter but it is also a fairly thick amount of oil so I don't go that route when I want shatter anyways but I just want to show you how the oil transforms to become wax after this state.

The next picture is a few hours past the shatter state and as you can see it is starting to wax up in those foggy cloudy areas. I keep purging this way at 100-105F and it will continue to wax up more and more until it is a solid wax. The cloudy picture is around 8 hrs of purging after the oil was settled down after de-muffin.

it's a Rival Deep dish Griddle found at any Wal-Mart for 16$..

Yup, sand is directly in griddle...I first layered raw rice as a base to conduct and buffer more heat...
The blue thing is my IR point & shoot.

Heading to walmart thanks ! And I have plentyyyyyy of sand !! I think that buffer is the key. Also going to get a probe thermometer to embed in the send at bottom of chamber like you.

Hahaha both wal marts sold out of that particular griddle . Wonder why!!

So do you use both raw rice and sand ? Not sure if you tried rice first and decided sand was better or you use both , thanks. Yoda - how did it turn out man ?
