Aurora Indica, Skunk #11 and a Surprise!

So you don't have to scroll down I'll reveal the surprise now. Out of the 5 pack of Nirvana Aurora Indica, it appears and smells as though 2 of the seeds are not Aurora Indica, they are actually New York Power Diesel. Here's why I think so:

All 5 plants were identical in appearance in veg. But starting at the second week of bloom 2 of the plants took off and stretched like crazy. You can't blame the light, it's a 600 watt HPS in a air cooled hood and I kept the bulb about 16 inches away from the tops of the plants and then lowered it to about 12 inches to try and stop the stretch. I had to lop off several of the highest colas on one of the plants or they would have went over 5 feet tall. That doesn't sound like an Aurora Indica. Meanwhile the other 3 plants did about what you would expect of an indica - stayed fairly short and made big fat leaves and later big fat buds. According to Nirvana one of the New York Power Diesel's parents is Aurora Indica which could explain why the plants looked exactly the same during veg.

Here's where it gets interesting:

Now at the end of week 6 of bloom, the 3 indicas have big fat blooms with very little smell, while the 2 stretchies have these wispy popcorn buds with a *very* pronounced diesel aroma. It's clear to me these are 2 different strains.

I figure that the employees of Nirvana, maybe, medicate on the job a little and the quality control slipped a bit and a couple of NYPD seeds got into my 5 pack of Aurora Indica. AWESOME. I'm not mad at all. I've never grown a diesel strain before, so this should be fun. Kudos to Nirvana!

The Dutch Passion Skunk #11 got in there because it was a Attitude freebie from awhile back and I germed it as a hedge in case of poor germination rate on the AIs. All 5 AIs sprouted so I should have culled the skunk, but against my better judgement I made a place for it in the tent. As it's turning out the Skunk #11 has been a joy to grow so far and the smell hints at some really nice smoke to come.

I'll pick up at the first week of flowering and follow through to a smoke report after curing.

Comments and suggestions are welcome.

Day 6-1.jpg

3½ gallon Air Pots
Fox Farms Happy Frog
1 teaspoon per gallon of soil of Marine Cuisine
1 teaspoon per gallon of soil of Dolomite Lime
Botanicare Pro Grow in veg
Fox Farms Tiger Bloom
Fox Farms Trio (Open Sesame, Beastie Bloom and Cha Ching)
Bat Guano top dressed.
Botanicare Liquid Karma and Sweet for kelp and carbs.

I used the chemical ferts very sparingly this time and I'm getting no leaf burn at all. I'm sure the dolomite lime helped.

I'm skipping the pictures from veg because there is nothing interesting to show. First picture is day 6 bloom. The stretch is just beginning.

My thoughts on Air Pots.

Pros: According to the manufacture's claims I'm getting a superior root ball because the plant is not wasting it's energy growing roots that circle the inside of the pot. And cannabis roots love oxygen. Healthy roots should mean bigger buds, right?

Cons: As Subcool has pointed out you have to water more often with Air Pots because the soil dries so much faster. And watering by hand takes much longer because you can't just dump the water and let it soak in. If you do that most of the water will run out the holes. You have to pour it in slowly and let it sink in slowly. Watering 6 plants with a gallon and a half of water can take 20 minutes. Not a problem for me because I enjoy watering. I can see how this would be a problem for a commercial grower.

Next picture is from day 22 of 12/12 and as you can see the Diesel in the back is taking off compared to the Indica in the foreground.

hey hemp did your ah3 ever get any better taste or smell after a couple months cure?
Arjans Haze #3. Yes they did. After about 6 months of cure the lemon has come out more and the sandlewood. The taste is not bad but it's not connoisseur. Stone is pleasant and up but not super strong. My final thought on Arjan's Haze #3: Except for the midget sativa novelty of this plant there is no reason to grow it again because there are so many better choices.

Day 31. Plants girl parts getting sexy :eyesmoke:

Dutch Passion Skunk #11. I'm really glad I made room for this lady. The smell is like Pineapple only lighter and fresher with a hint of over-ripe. The smell alone is intoxicating.

Here's a shot of "down there" showing how I removed all the lower foliage because there's not much light and to promote airflow. You can also see the nice, candelabra shape of the Skunk compared to the stretchy Diesel.

Day 36. Now the bud pr0n begins.

Day 39.

Day 40

Day 40. Notice that the Indica's leaves are much lighter than the Diesel's. I think that's because I have been mistakenly feeding the plants the same. The Indicas need more fertilizer than the more Diesels with their half Sativa heritage.

Day 40. Skunk #11 is getting fragrant. The smell is lovely :eyesmoke: I wish I had a better camera to show you the close ups of the Skunks buds. It makes all these empty seeds cases and then they look like they exploded after they pop open.

The Indica in the foreground has been boosted up on top of some books. Those MCSE books have finally become useful

Buds getting gnarly. Minor gnat problem.

This brings the journal up to the present. I'll post pictures as often as there is anything new to see up through harvest, drying, curing and smoke test. As stated above, questions and comments are welcome
