Aussie High Lights – we're official

What is interesting is if you move the lights closer together at 1m canopy height, you pick up 20 PPFD with a better overall spread of light and almost no loss of light in the corners. This is due to less reflective wall losses.




Here is one of my favourite 1.2m x 1.2m layouts. This is 6x High Light 420 panels at 2A each (87W per panel) for a total of 522W. That's an average of 1025 PPFD over a traditional 4' x 4' for just over 500W with about 180 PPFD difference across the canopy.

Just had a couple seeds pop up earlier this week. I plan on running them full cycle under my 2x highlights boards again, only this time I added a 24 watt 6%uvb t5 arcadia light as well. Pretty cold here so I figured if nothing else, the arcadia would help raise the temps a little bit. Hopefully running the arcadia's the full 18hrs of veg won't be too much, but I have the lights around 36" off the seedlings at the moment. Figure will just have to adjust as things go along. Also going to be putting these plants into a larger container to flower this time instead of trying to pretty much water only in 3 gallon smart pots of organic soil. I'll try throw some pictures up as things progress, but hopefully I can minimize my mistakes this go round and be able to finish some beauties.

Your new boards really do look awesome. I still consider the original highlights boards I got to be superior to other boards and these new ones seem to have taken that top spot. Look forward to seeing some more grows done under these and wish you all the best moving forward as well.

I'm pretty lazy and dont like changing things out too much. That said, I ran these in veg over my other lights last couple times and really liked them. Plants just looked super healthy under them, nice and green, almost a blueish tinge to them that i liked as well.

I'm far from knowing what I'm doing, but these lights are dope all around imo.

It's true the panels are optimised for flowering – many of the grow reports we've had on the new boards are showing reduced flowering times by 5-7 days with the same or increased yields (which we attribute to the extra far red) – but a "true" full spectrum should also outperform other lights in veg. This is something we are seeing and I've explained the reasoning behind it in other posts, but the simple reason is that red and far red together accelerate photosynthesis and this will happen whether the plant is vegging or flowering. The added UVA and near-UV also counter stretch, which is why we are not seeing any additional stretch under these boards in veg or flower.

Here is something that might interest you. On the left we have the original High Red boards with 6% UVB Arcadia bulbs and on the right are the new High Light 420 boards. This is in a 4.5' x 4.5' running a total of 900w (450W at each set of boards). There are indicas on each side and a couple of more sativa doms in the middle for six plants in total: 3 x 2 (reference the pots).

The 420 boards are finishing the same strains 5 days earlier with higher yields. This is the second run like this that has just been harvested with the same results. There is obviously some overlapping light but the plants on each side get most of their light from their own fixture, so it's not a bad trial. It would be better to hang some white film down the middle to separate each side, but the grower thought this layout andplant count might be better for overall yields.

We also measured the light with a PAR meter/spectrometer and the results were pretty close to the DIALux simulations with 70% reflective walls. That seems about right for this particualt tent, as it's a cheapy and the walls do not appear to be as reflective as other tents we've seen. I think the grower was talking about getting a new tent, which I think would be an improvement. The lighting setup would work realy well in a 5' x 5' (1.5m x 1.5m).

This is 880W total in a 1.35m x 1.35m at 40cm hang height – pretty much what you see above.

Here is the same set-up at 50cm and 60cm hang heights, which would cover all the different levels of canopy in the photos.

For the record, the hand-held spectrometer readings were a bit lower than these PAR maps are showing, but were all within about 100 PPFD. The tent was not fully closed during most readings and also the 420 light readings did not have the benefit of another set of 420 lights next to them for overlapping light. The High Red boards next to them are about 20% less efficient. The UVB bulbs would have made up for some of the shortfall, but the UVB is out of the meter's range, so is not counted in the PPFD readings.

Far Red also falls outside the hand-held spectrometer readings (that only measure up to 700nm) and there is over 9% Far Red in the 420 boards. The IES files these DIALux simulations are based on include the entire spectrum (based on LED Teknik's goniometer readings that have a much wider range), so you would expect the PAR maps to be 5-10% higher than the hand-held readings anyway. The only way to compare apples to apples is with a full-spectrum PAR meter that reads from about 380nm to 800nm.

Yea I can only hope to achieve something along those lines with this run, that tent looks amazing. Never used the Arcadia before, so a first for me. If I remember correctly, doesn't that grower run the Arcadia the full 12 hour lights on cycle?

He does, yes. That's why he runs the 6% bulbs and not something stronger. UVB breaks down THC as the plant produces more of it, so it's a balancing act between stressing the plant with UVB to produce more cannabinoids and destroying those cannabinoids with UVB exposure as they are produced. The idea is to end up with the plant producing more than the UVB exposure breaks down. That's why some growers use more powerful UVB lamps but for only a few hours a day. UVB can also cause DNA damage that will stunt the plant if it is too strong, so yields can suffer.

Results are in on this grow. Just over 50oz again from 900W. The plants on the right under the High light 420s finished four days earlier than the ones on the left under the High Red + UVB bulbs.

High Red yield was 462 grams and HL420 yield was 550 grams. The two plants in the middle yielded 392 grams.

This is the second run in this room with the same results. The new 420 boards are beating the old boards for faster finishing times with higher yields. I also have some samples ready for cannabinoid testing which I'll post in the coming weeks. It will be interesting to see the difference between the 420 boards and the supplemental UVB.

I'm not sure, but I do know he vegs separately, so the flowering tent is always full. As soon as one run is finished, plants go in and start flowering for the next run. I'm guessing he vegs for 4-5 weeks.

This isn't one of Prawn's grows, but I do know he mentored the guy. The guy who grew this always gets over 50oz per grow and I think his best is 56-57oz. Yields vary depending on what strains he grows, the time of year and how much time he spends looking after it as he works remotely and the grow room is on autopilot a lot of the time. With a bit more care and attention he should be able to do even better.

They're not the cheapest on the block, but they are arguably one of the best – the extra yield and quality pays for itself. Don't forget you guys get a 10% discount on the listed prices and we can offer better prices on larger orders.

What you have to remember is, you can buy a cheap-arse Chinese light and it may last more than 12 months, but by the time you have added supplementary Far Red and UV diodes, it will be the same price or more expensinve than buying an all-in-one board like the High Light 420 in the first place and the quality won't even be the same.

Our spectrum is proven to work and we don't bullshit about any of the specs. We are completely transparant and we offer the best customer service in the business, especially if you are in Australia. All those things add up and are usually paid for after the first grow.
