Australians: Digital Temperature/Humidity Meter for $14.95!

So I'm walking around my local Bunnings the other day, when - stopping at the seed racks, I noticed a cute little green meter that measures Temperature and Relative Humidity. Picked in up, and for $14.95, couldn't resist, the only drawback I noticed, was that it requires two AAA batteries, but being not much more than an LCD screen, I thought about the old 80's digital watches and how long THEY lasted on a tiny Button-Cell battery, so I take the meter home with me.

On the way home, I peruse the back of the pack, and find it has a few more features:
  • Temperature meter; Switch-able between Fahrenheit and Celsius.
  • Relative Humidity (%)
  • Large LCD Clock (Who doesn't like more clocks around? I am forever demanding someone tell me the time when I"m not sitting here on my laptop).
  • Temperature 'Trend' Graph: Constantly displays a bar graph showing temperature fluctiations over the past 12 hours.
  • Forecast: An icon-style Sun, cloud, or rain depending on the weather.
  • Temperature & Humidity "high and low" for the day.
So now, you're thinking, "Pfft whatever man", and I know it's not going to be able to compete with some $500+ meter that's mainlined into your household power supply, but at $14 from any Bunnings store, I think it's a good, cheap, disposable option for anyone wants to KNOW at least two of the five Limiting Factors for your plants. Temp and Humidity.

Anyhoo, I've had this one running since the weekend, and I've been impressed to find, that comparing the temperature this meter displays, it's never any more than 0.1 degrees off the Bureau of Meteorology web site (for Adelaide). Clicking the high/low button - the same thing. It is actually accurate enough to WORK - practically!

Okay, so yeah, these little Meters are probably made in China like everything else these days, but for $14.95, they're essentially disposable like I said.

I don't know where you'd get this meter in other countries, but being made in China, I'm sure they'd be sold in plenty of other warehouse-sized garden centers somewhere.

Anyhow, just a heads-up, that if you've wanted to by yourself a meter for a while, and just figured the cost was prohibitive: Now you have a quick, inexpensive option. One inside each cabinet only cost you $30, and I think that's pretty good.

I'm thinking of getting a few more just for the clock displays :)

Anyway, here it is. The photos are a bit out of focus, cos the LCD screen is so reflective, the camera lens struggles to focus-in on it.

I'll keep using/testing the one I have, and comparing daily temp's to the news etc, and if it shits itself and dies on me, I'll return and state the fact here :)

PS: The humidity isn't quite as easy to compare, since most TV/Internet weather sites only show 'chance of rain %' rather than the actual relative humidity, but I can confidently say, that when *I* start feeling sticky and hot, the meter reflects that with a 58-68% humidity. Then, when the stickiness goes (it's summer here still), the meters rel. humidity display drops.

Anyway, just a product review that I thought might help someone.
