I did one outdoors. Awesome to have a plant finish in august, but it was in a small pot, and the smoke didnt last very long
Autoflower roots shooting from the bottom of the solo cup. Is this normal?

I have to disagree with you regarding starting in a large pot for a beginner.
First of all, a monkey can make a perfect impression of a solo cup in the soil, remove the plant and soil from the cup, and place it in the hole. It's certainly not difficult and the slowdown won't even be noticeable if done properly.
In addition, starting in a 5 gallon container requires a lot more skill maintaining the proper moisture level to the roots for fast growth. Easy for experienced growers but it's usually a beginners hardest challenge........ how often and how much to water. I see many threads started by beginners asking about slow growth........their 3 week old plant looks like it's 3 days old. Even Mephisto (who only sell autos) recommends starting in solo cups and transplanting
What's worse?
A day or two slowdown from transplanting or a 3 week slowdown because of poor watering skills?
Just my take.

I water on day one drop the seed and don’t water again for a week or so. Not sure how that’s more complicated than cutting them cutting roots and changing pot size. Thank you for the reply and that’s exactly why I started in a solo my last seedling I started in a 3gal with coco/pearlite and bottled nutes Idk if I had issues with over watering, or under feeding so on this one I used a solo and ffof so I can closely monitor watering and not have to worry about feeding for the first couple of weeks. Solos are just on whim at times , make a transplantable plug I guess you can say. Or just in final if I prepped a container at the time.
But , I no longer use rooter plugs and the like ......
Autos can be transplanted fairly easily ( when they are younger ) solo cup grow initially under close dimmer light to ease their setup before transplant and power up. But , suggest scoop of myco / rooting powder either medium hole or dust over root ball. Follow up with watering. Then leave her alone.

I throw the germed seeds straight into their final pots now. I used to do what you did but became a PITA time wise a lot of fluffing around and this method became much simpler for me. All my autos grow outdoors.
