They start flowering a lot earlier. But I believe they still need to be on 12/12. You can grow any marijuana on a flowering light schedule, it just minimizes your veg time, which isn't ideal. Autoflowers are engineered to do a better job of flowering with little vegetation.

Auto-flower strain are normal strains back crossed with a ruderalis strain so that they will, automatically flower without a change in photoperiod

wow thanks for all of that speedy feedback I actually googled it an got this:
So what is auto-flowering? Auto-flowering characteristic grants a cannabis plant the ability to completely flower without the need for reduction of day-light hours; in turn, eliminating the need for a timer. It will grow consistently well and finish under 24 hours of light - from sprouting to harvest - in eight weeks, although you can achieve similar results with 18 hours of light per day; if you like to give your room time to cool down, for example. The point is, with Lowryder, there is no need for a change in the light period to induce flowering, nor is it necessary to have separate vegetative and flowering rooms!
Thats from a site called CannaSeed.com. Is that right? thats crazy are the strains lesser strenght, does anyone know what the average thc content is for lowryder... ive heard of it but never tried it

so if you flower at 18/6 and never switch... does that mean bigger and more buds with autoflowering strains? because they get 50% more photoperiod time? this i gotta see. are these strains any good? how long has this been around?

Kaigan, I'm growing 5 EasyRider plants from Amsterdam Marijuana Seeds and I believe they are similar to lowryders. Anyways, the THC content is roughly 15% which is more than enough to put your "dick in the dirt." Concerning light schedules, you should go with 18/6 or 20/4 any more than this is a waste of light energy because the plants will go into a 4 hr rest period even if you leave the lights on 24 hr a day. So, you should do 18/6 or 20/4. I'm doing 18/6 because, based on what I've researched, 18/6 is the best schedule. However, you can do 20/4 I suppose. I'm in my first grow so I wouldn't know for sure. At any rate, the plants need some kind of a night or dark period to rest. Further, you don't necessarily get more bud with autos. You can simply grow them quicker than you can with your normal photo plants. On average you can get in two auto grows in the amount of time it takes you to do one normal grow. Normal grows typically use 18/6 for the vegetative state and then switch to 12/12 to induce flowering. Of course, like you stated you do not need to switch to 12/12 with autos. You can keep the light schedule at 18/6 or 20/4 the whole entire time. To do otherwise only reduces your yield. Autos are mainly for people using compact fluorescent lights in small grow spaces such as bedroom closets because they don't take up much room. Normally you only need six square inches of space for an auto which means you could easily fit 10 plants in a 3 ft by 3ft space. You'd be hard pressed to do this with 10 normal plants. On the other hand, normal plants have greater yields because they can get bigger, but, of course, their maturation time is longer. Clearly, autos have their advantages and disadvantages. For me though, they are the right choice because I have limited grow space.
