automatic watering question

So I had an idea for an automatic watering system for my next grow. I will only be growing 2 plants right now, just for personal use. My idea involved hanging or mounting a 5 gallon arrowhead bottle above the plants and have a timer activate a valve to allow a certain amount of water to flow. I'm just trying to get some opinions on the idea and see if anyone is using a system lilke this. Also was wondering if directing the water to the bottom half of the pot would help build a better root system? Thanks for all the help.

That's a great Idea I think I'll steal it and market it ass a vacation watering device J/k but it may be marketable.

Top watering seems to work best.

If you could have a sensor tell the valve when the soil is dry that would be even better.

And don't' forget your water needs to be able to hold some oxygen, it can't just sit indefinitely. Maybe have an air stone running in it?
