It is usually recommended that you put your ballast on something. Mine is one a 3 inch platform and is outside my grow area. They last about 5 - 10 years on avg.

I place mine on a metal chair. Does it have a remote ballast with the rubber on the bottom

Is the ballast in side the reflector with the light? Or do you have a seperate unit that makes a buzzing noise connected on a chord to the light

its a seperate ballast connected by 2 sections ov cord but it buzzes but very quiet and in a separte room from the grow.

put your ballast on a pile of newspapers, it will be fine dont worry
sure, burn the house down....

use a ceramic tile or plate. it will disperse the heat throughout the plate/tile, and will be much less of a potential hazard.

if you don't know how to make it a remote ballast (if it's not already), here is a link that shows you exactly how to wire it. just follow the directions and it will all work perfectly.

and most likely a digital ballast....

his is a magnatron or similar, magentic ballast with step up transformer. the do get very hot, to the point that you can't lift or move them when they're on (they WILL melt the skin on you hands, ask me how i know...)

Its a must that ballast don't sit directly on the ground where if a flood or waterspill occur it can enter the ballast and become a hazardous or even deadly environment. As far as heat goes, thats something that you will have to deal with yourself, its your own environment.
