to ignite the bulb and maintain a "steady" current.
  1. Function
  2. Ballasts are used to regulate the amount of electric current a light bulb draws from a power source. They are also used to provide starting voltages for certain types of light bulbs.
  3. Facts
  4. According to the Lighting Research Center, without the use of a ballast, light bulbs connected to high-voltage power sources would draw in uncontrollable amounts of electrical current. The bulb would immediately overheat and burn out.
ahhhhh
makes sense
thanks

Do not do it, it is incredibly unsafe. Bulbs and ballasts are meant to be run in matched sets. The toaster analogy is all wrong for this situation. That 600w bulb will consume a more than its rated 600 watts if you give it the opportunity. When its matched with a 600 ballast it does just fine since the rating won't be exceeded. Hook it up to a 1000w ballast and it will suck more juice and run hotter than it was ever meant to. You risk exploding the bulb, causing brutal injuries and burning your house down.

DON'T DO IT! RUN BULBS AND BALLASTS OF MATCHING RATINGS!

The ballast has UP To 1000 watts available, the 600 watt bulb will consume it's 600 watts. Nothing is pushing or pumping!
When you plug your 1500 watt toaster into the wall, (where MANY 1,000's of watts are available), the toaster just uses it's alloted 1500 watts, NOTHING getting toasted but the TOAST, LOL. Good luck & good grow.......BB
iv just waked and bake that is post made me laugh, then go plug my toaster in ha ha ha
