ok so as I have off at least once a week now due to bad weather I decided to do a stealth grow in a spare closet. Everything is finished but I have one big problem and thats how to silence my loud ass 600w ballast.

I have already tried putting it in a rubbermaid container and venting it with pc fans, then then surrounding the ballast with old shirts and rags but still no fucking luck...

HELLLLLPP :joint:

What kind of ballast is it? I have a sunsystem ballast that the housing was buzzing. I jammed some shims around the case in a few places and it is 100% quiet now.

Hey there.

As an electrician I can't say I've dealth with a 600w ballast before, but generally if a ballast is buzzing, its cactus. How old is it? Also, I would rethink padding it with any cloth; chances are it'll overheat and cause a fire. I've seen lower rated ballasts do it before, so please be careful :)

bury it in dirt? thats nuts dude whats gonna happen when you water your electrical appliance? probably not that good. eh? place it on rubber pads or a concrete block to isolate it. or... get a new ballast good luck

My ballast runs totally silently and its the cheapest one i could buy.
Why do other ballasts buzz?

"thats nuts dude whats gonna happen when you water your electrical appliance?"

Where did you think CFL's come from????

well i have a brand new ballast i bought from htgsupply and it has a buzzing sound too (nothing major )but does that mean i got ripped off and they sent me a used ballast or is it just the specific ballast ? i mean when i close the closet door i cant even hear it

So what you are saying is, if I water
my ballast... It will grow CFL's!? Wait
a minute... how often do I water it to
get 200w CFL's? What kinda a yield are
we talking here?

i have a 600w hps ballast from htgs. mine buzzed so i put 2 bricks under it and suspended it up off the floor. helps that thing cool down since they run hot and gets rid of the noise. if it still makes a sound, place a couple more bricks on top, i had to lay a 5 lb weight to stop it completely. hope that helps, growing stealth can be a bitch..

holy crap you mean if I pour water on my ballasts I'll grow lightbulbs??? You must've tried this already:roll: I think the point about putting the ballast on a concrete block is a pretty good one:joint:anyways I'm off to water my ballasts:peace:

I guess Yields and Wattages would be dependent upon Grow Medium.

Light Warrior by Fox Farm could be the best... it might help your CFL's.

I didn't use "Light Warrior"... As you'd guess, a couple of nice, fat CFL's and a bunch of "Pop Corn" Incandescents...

But I'm knew so don't listen to me.

Hilarious pics:mrgreen:
Hope you haven't damaged your roots by shoving those in the soil:blsmoke:

I actually ended up enclosing my ballast in a cardboard box and using two pc fans to vent it. I then placed this into a rubber maid container insulating it with old clothes. Ill get some pics up soon.
