:wall::wall::wall:i am thinking of going HPS but i keep haring about the buzzing noise that it makes. now im am planning a move and a new grow room that will be dedicated to growing. it will be in my home that i share will fam but they want know about it i doint want anyone to know about it. my knew grow room will also be my ""office / man cave / personal space"" that the wife and kids know better than to go in. like where i am now. but bigger. only i will have a key

now my question is about the buzz. sound. Is it really loud. i mean , could i sleep next to the ballast., could i be in the next room over and hear it, could i be in the room next to the room that the ballast is in and hear it, could i invite guest over with out constently having to answer the question:cuss: "whats that sound":cuss:
how long does this sound last. does it buz the whole time its on
could i build a sound proof box for it. does dif. watts have dif. loudness
i watch a lot of youtube grow video but never hear buzzing sound. they cant all be useing the electric ballast, or could they. is it even worth it to pay more for the electric version :wall: just an answer to the first question would be fine but answer them all if you can

I use a magnetic ballast.....it makes buzzing noise when the light first turns on (not loud buzzing, its quite silent)....thats about it... I sleep two feet from my ballast...

this thing looks great is this the type of ballast that comes in complete systems
HLBADILT.jpg

More lumens - up to a 20% increase
Dedicated Voltage - dual voltage ballasts sacrifice performance
Enhanced Bulb Compatibility - works with all major brands of lamps
Silent - the days of humming and buzzing are long gone
Internal RF Shielding - best on the market
Ultra Light Weight - only 8 pounds
Soft Start - increases lamp life and lumen depreciation
External Fuse System - protects against power surges

I'm sure you could find it in a complete system. I got mine at my local shop and had to buy every thing separately. I ended up paying about $380 for everything.

Mine is silent, the only noose coming from my room is the fans.

am i to understand that i am better off buying the ballast and light seperate

i saw a ballast in homedepot once, but they had wires hanging out of both ends and had no way to plug it in. and they look way smaller than the ones i see online (slightly larger then a block of cheese.) do i put it all together my self. if so how. or would it be better to just buy it allready put together( light ballast cord)

but if you would have bought it all together from a shop how much would it have cost/ and was it hard to put together

They didn't have the 600w ballast I wanted in a kit. So I bought the ballast, light bulb, reflector, and socket w/cord. The ballast looks exactly like that pic, The plug you see is were the cord for the light socket plugs in. On the other end there is a plug a lot like the one on the back of you computer (cord included) for power. Everything either plugs in or screws in setup was about 5 min.

yeah i hear you but. that was going to be the last thing i tryed because i am a little noid about ging to the hydro shop here, there is only one. and i think its being monitored.
the reason being that the local news has been reporting about "kush" a lot, and how its grown locally and by hydroponic. so if i was the feds all i would have to do is watch places like thoses( if there not the feds) and see who come out with large packegs and write tag no. down/ but i guess i could take the bus and pay in cash but how large is a system
this is why i like to do DIY

a magnetic ballast is much more quiet than your thinking. Its not much louder than your cell phone on vibrate... you could sleep next to it your not gonna hear it. If you go outside the room and close the door, no chance of hearing it. Unless you take company into your man cave, nobody will know as long as you dont show them. Digital ballasts are silent as far as I know? I'm not rich enough to upgrade yet but I hear they do wonderful things. However IMO your going to want to be more concerned about smell than the sound of a ballast. Hope that helps a bit :)

I hear you on walking into the dro store too ;) I always think in my head that this mother fucker behind the counter has a badge or the closest street light has a camera to read plates lol... but after you go a few times it seems more comfortable. IMO its a safer way than ordering certain things to your door which could raise as much or not more attention. I recomend goin into your local store and just chit chatting with the guy for a while then leaving. Dont buy anything the first time or two, just check the place out. Get to recognize the people who work there. Ill often park at the store a block over and walk there. Or if I'm pickin up something big I'll send a close well trusted friend to pick it up for me and blaze with him

r they realy that small- then i could just get on a city bus with it in a big bag noone would know, but you and me and them so if i get pulled over in a bus then i could just post on here the truth about them- i would have to tranfer to maybe 4-6 buses so i should loose them fast

yeah been there a time or too, these guys are always looking at something on there computer screen laughing , to me acking to much like stoners, dressing all grunge , the only odd thing is there all in great shape, really strong and they look young
to like theye r freash out of the academy
i know that i a over thinking it , and they hardly ever ask you if you need help with anything they just let you walk the store for hours before anyone ask you if you need anything-and for me thats really odd- then when someone ask you something, its like they want you to till them what you want (im thinking self incrimenate) they dont surgest anything at all, or give alturnative to what your looking for (they dont say "or you could use this", "hey try putting this here and youll get better results", " if i were you ill try this, everyone says this is the best", they could just not be helpfull, when im in there i feel like im in a porn shop, no eye contact, everyones buy themselfves and if they bring someone they whisper, and everyone moves fast (but the workers). it could be me, or them. i could be extra paranoide, or they could be just a bad store (but they do have everything you need to go hydro, and the store is really big)

Magnetic ballasts are good and are fairly quiet when new however they do get louder and weaker over time. They last a long time though and are fairly reliable. Electronic ballasts are completely silent and do not deteriorate like a magnetic ballast over time. However, I have no idea how reliable they are over a long period of time, say over 5 years. I'm on a second grow with a electronic ballast and I have to say they are definetly worth the money if you're buying a new ballast. I have older magnetic's and I swear the electronic is putting out more lumens even though they are all 1000 watts. I bought mine here and while its not a named product, there stuff is pretty good. No complaints so far.
