Ballasts and Bulbs qustion

currently i got 400w bulb and ballast set up
and its time for me to change bulb,
i was wonderin if i can run 600w or 1000w bulb on the 400w ballast?

would it work ?

never use any bulb but the specific one your ballast is rated for. it could cause a fire. even if it didnt cause a fire it still would not be operating very efficiently.

how many plants maximum i could pull it off with 400w hps setup ?

btw, where should i mount the ballast (its quiet heavy) on the wall? im doin SOG in closet

Also you want to keep the ballast in a dry, well ventilated area. Mounting it on drywall sound sketchy unless you can get it on a stud, even then I wouldn't risk it.

As for how many... I believe a 400w HPS has a 3'x3' area of reliable light. If you space your plants a foot apart that would be nine plants, I would say six to play it safe. Thats just my opinion.

bless america said it all except if youre doing sog youre going to have more than 6 plants i bet. how big of a size of pots are you going to use? if youre doing sog with a 400hps then you can only fit the amount of pots that fit into a 3x3 area. square pots are good for maximizing space. youll want the plants a few inches apart as well. hope this helps

its 5x2 space closet , i was also wonderin if i should go with hydrophonics in this case or strait up pro mix soils, i was gonna put em in with 2 square inch rock wools and put them on the clay pellets or promix. what are your suggestions, its my first gro

p.s : for germinating issue, i germinated 20 and only 5 of seedlings became 3 inches rest is still in a bean shape. should i just let it photosynthesis on sunlight ? or leave it back in the dark room .
