Ive got a 900 watt fixture that has 3 fans not working (driver died) and i havnt bothered to change it, have run it on 5 fans(instead of for over 6 months with no burning of the chip. in fact its the same fixture i used to make the par map.
I dont recommend what you did, but i dont think it will actually harm anything. Theres enough aluminum and fans in there to keep it more then cool. but yes, pushing air ONTO the heatsink is better for the fixture and the chips.
