Day 5 Veg

Lots of growth from everyone except for the two which are stunted in the last day. Just watered for about 4-5 minutes, removing the drip whips from the pots which are slower/wetter. The plant I plan to use as a mother is absolutely crazy, and is currently working on its 4th set of leaves. I wish I could flower her so bad! But some of the others are looking pretty damn promising, too. I have root growth out of the 3.5" mesh pots from all but a couple plants; the best ones have about 4" of root mass below the cube, reaching into the res!. I'm planning on rounding out a week of veg and then flowering. Although if these were all as robust as my prospective mom, I would flower them riiiiiight now!

A couple things to note if you are using/planning to use a BCNL setup (that I almost fudged myself):

The box is a great place to veg, but you need to remember to water by manually overriding your pump. I have maybe 2 plants that could deal with the full watering schedule right now, and at least one that the full schedule would kill. DON'T FORGET TO UNPLUG THE PUMP FROM THE "Timed Watering" OUTLET AFTER YOU ARE DONE WATERING! The box is a tool to increase environmental control, it doesn't grow trees for you.

When you are not using your reservoirs, there is an airline override on the back of the machine. This turns off the air pumps, making the box significantly quieter. DON'T FORGET TO TURN THE AIR PUMPS BACK ON WHEN YOU FILL YOUR RESERVOIR(S)!!!! For a minute it won't matter, as your root system will not reach the water, but if your roots sit in a non-aerated res, they will drown, and quickly.

There are 2 light settings for each side of the box, 12/12 and 18/6. I would really consider doing 24 hours of CFL the next time I veg, but it would involve resetting the clock daily... which would eff your flowering side if you were doing both.

No time again to add pics to this post, check the album. I promise to get more pics for day 1 of flowering.

Day 8 Veg

basically waiting for some more robust root development in two of my plants before I start flowering. I'm willing to wait an extra couple days because they have literally had NO vertical growth, which is awesome. Everyone has been expending their energy getting bushier and expanding surface area. Mixed my flowering reservoir nutrients today and filled the res. Then realized I used the veg formula! LOL. But no matter, gave me an excuse to switch everyone from my CFL in the veg chamber to my 400w MH lamp on my flowering side. Switched from BCNL feeding schedule to Advanced Nutrients nutrient calculator. The PPM change from my previous res is a LOT, so I'm watching closely to make sure no one has an adverse reaction today. Heat, light intensity and PPM have all increased dramatically today so hopefully all goes well. Of my 8 plants two seem to be stunted, probably from being behind and then overfed when everyone else was ready to transplant. One of these is a mutant, and looks strong enough to be flowered in a couple days, the other will probably die or need to be tossed as it will be behind the others flowering schedule.

So I'm looking at having 7 ready to flower in the next couple days, 1 of which I'm going to transplant to coir (I guess...) and stick back under the CFL in a pot. This most impressive plant is really a cut above the rest, and will become my mother. Next round will be FLUSH with 9 clones of this lady! So excited. Roughly 10 weeks to smoke!

Day 1 Flowering

Sorry for the gap in posts, lots of stuff going on here. I decided to let everyone veg for a few days longer than planned so a couple stragglers could catch up, which they certainly have! Lots and lots of root growth from all parties. Transplanted my mom to coir yesterday and put her back under the CFL. Waited for my MH to go dark at midnight and switched over to HPS to start this morning.

When I was transferring my mom, I noticed what appears to be root rot on several plants. I'm pretty distressed by this, and I don't know how it will turn out... These are the steps that I have taken so far:

Immediately filled my smaller reservoir with PH 5.8 water and 5ml/gal hyox. Transferred all plants to that res.

I then removed the large reservoir from my flowering side after draining it. I then washed out the res and gave it a hyox mop down with paper towels.

I mixed my week 1 flowering nutes and water, and then refilled the reservoir.

I also mixed a 5ml/gal hyox / pH balanced water solution in a spray bottle and gave affected roots a spritz before returning to the flowering reservoir...

I'm pretty shocked about root rot. I'm working with a completely clean box and reservoir (which was only filled 2 days ago). My reservoir temp is around 65-70 and my room temp is around 78-80. I figure this is due to over-watering, which I am kicking myself for. I waited and waited to put them on the timed feeding schedule because I didn't want something like this to happen. I figured with how much root growth was present they were ready and could use a 2x daily watering to avoid salt buildup, etc. etc.

I'm a little worried that this could wind up dooming my grow, but I'm hoping for a rebound. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Pics soon...

Just gave affected root systems one more light misting of hyox solution before bed to help work on the parts that don't sit below water level.

Also I've removed the pump from power. Not trying to make this problem worse by overwatering tomorrow. I will water manually with the water override or just skip the AM watering session.

Realized I've been using an absurdly low h202 concentration because mine is 3%.... wow. Possibly fucked. Just added about 250ml to my 23L (6gal) res and also made a concentrated spray and sprayed roots again. Christ if this ends it for me I'm gonna be so pissed. My rationale is 5ml/gal 35% = roughly 50ml/gal 3% (a little more obviously). Please help if you have any insight. No one seems to respond so I posted to the plant problems forum. Thanks for reading. Here's hoping there is more to write about.

Day 2 Flowering

No above ground repercussions so far on the root rot. Seems to be some improvement. I've been spraying my root systems w. h202 solution, and I just grabbed some more, bringing my h202 level to 50ml/gal (remember, its only 3% so thats just under 5ml/gal for the 35% people seem to be able to get). Talked to a hydro store that carries 29%, but requires hazmat shipping, etc. I also have talked to BCNL about my temperature issues, which they are looking into and will give me a call back tomorrow during the day. Currently I have my room at 65. Supposedly flowering chamber temps should run about 8 degrees or so higher than ambient, and I am sitting at about 13 above. I moved the unit away from a wall a few days ago, and removed the vent covers to increase airflow because light leaks are no biggie to me. I also am waiting to attach the carbon filter, because that will increase temps just a degree or two.

I'm adding pH balanced ice cubes to my res to keep the temp in the middle 60s. I'm currently freezing a couple of water bottles to act as chillers, which is what BCNL recommended. I'm really confused as to how these guys keep their res temps below the temperature of the flowering chamber when it is all so enclosed. I've been searching forums to troubleshoot and stuff, but BCNL is as confused as I am about why I cant dial these temps in better. I'm really hoping that my mom doesn't succumb to root problems, maybe the transfer to coir will help a little. I'm optimistic that I will be able to curb the problem in the larger res as well, but am still worried.

Day 5 Flowering

I think I have the root rot under control completely. Gave them another fresh water h202 bath yesterday and did a complete res change. I think the extra effort will pay off in the long run. Keeping my res temp down with frozen water bottles and pH balanced ice cubes. After using the advanced nutrients nutrient calculator I would say be wary. I backed off the amounts on this res change and I think I'm burning a couple plants. I just added about 4L of clean pH balanced water to back off the ppm. Gonna take some pics now

Day 7 Flowering

Root rot curbed 100%, which is a big relief. Changing a frozen water bottle in the morning and evening, which is keeping my res in the lower 60s, which with my h202 level seems to keep the pythium at bay. As I said before I over fertilized on advice from advanced nutrients nutrient calculator. It's cool though I think the only one wilting will bounce back in the next couple days. Definitely killed a couple leaves here and there, but my PPMs weren't too too high so I'm chalking it up to trial and error. Haven't thinned out the solution any further (after adding 4L pH balanced water on the 29th), and this seems to have stopped any burn that was happening. Root structures look really really good, nice and healthy white now, and getting bushy. Not a lot of above-ground growth this week, other than stalks thickening a lot, some minor height increase, and lots of leaves/budding sites popping up. A plant I had expected to die weeks ago is rebounding, which is hilarious. She will get her first full feeding today; I think she just got waterlogged when I did my 1" to 3" rockwool transfer.

Sorry this thread has been so free of porn, I've been super busy the last two weeks, which was unexpected. Soooo for your viewing needs, two babies and mom, just rockin' it out. Big ups Barney's Farm Amsterdam! 7 weeks to go!

Look how thick that stem is! Fuck yeah.

Day 12 flowering

Flipped on the T-5s on Monday, soooo bright in the box. Did a res change and ppm increase yesterday, everyone rebounded well from the first weeks nutrient burn. Working closer too 1000 ppm now, and it seems to be fine. Went out and got a cO2 tank this morning, suckers are not cheap. Some above ground growth, mainly just beefing up; stems are getting super thick and lots of new branches are coming. Still not much of a height change so that's exciting. Tons of root growth from the plants that were lagging a little bit. One of the ladies I expected to die since seedling stage is rebounding like crazy, and will definitely wind up yielding something, which is awesome; she will have a root system to rival the others in a week I'd guess.

So not much to report overall; keeping the res cool, started cO2 injection, added dual T-5s. Had a dream I killed my mother plant, lol guess you can see where my head is at.

Little lady in the middle of the Tic tac toe board was nothing more than a stem and some cotyledon at the beginning of flowering! I almost threw her away... she just got too wet during veg because she was behind; awesome.

Day 14 Flowering

Thanks for the interest, Merricus!

Right now I'm basically following the Advanced Nutrients nutrient calc. I really like medicine man's blogspot, and his OG hydro schedule is pretty good. Right now I'm on my last day of week 2 flowering nutes.

Advanced calls for 92cc of Bloom A & B for weeks 1&2, that's it. I'm only using sensi 2 part, vitaboost (replaces b-52), overdrive, final phase, and of course some hyox.

This week I'm actually using about 85cc of each instead of 92cc due to some slight burn from last week, and one of my ladies being slightly smaller due to stunting in veg. PPM is still pretty low, at 900 today.

Tomorrow I switch to week 3 flowering which will be 92cc each sensi bloom A&B and 46cc vitaboost. This will stay flat until overdrive in weeks 5-6.

As for the stretch, I'm really not worried. I flowered at about 5", 6" for my largest. I don't anticipate (nor do I think it would be normal with the availability of light... its so effin bright) to see more than a quadruple increase in height, which should be perfect. When I clone my mother, I'm planning on vegging for only a couple days; my mother rooted super super fast so hopefully her clones will follow suit.

Here's something I was thinking / concerned about that maybe you can weigh in on:

The vent covers are obviously just to direct airflow, and they do not keep light in (which is fine). But I was also thinking, they don't keep light OUT, which seems a lot spicier. The sun comes up where I live at 6 maybe, so they are definitely getting dim light for about 2-3 hours of their dark cycle. It's not direct light obvs, just the ambient light in my room w all the blinds down, which is still sort of bright. I've got to assume this won't impede flowering, right? Because I would be pissed.

Can anyone tell me why it's automatically flipping some of my pictures sideways even though they're the same size?? Can I rotate them in my album??

Mom is getting huge.

To add a little perspective...

Day 15 Flowering -

[90ml Sensi Bloom A&B, 45ml Vitaboost Pro, 35ml H202, pH 5.6-5.7 ppm 1000]

Yet another fresh water/h202 bath and full res clean/change underway due to second pythium bloom this cycle. BCNL never called me back about my temp issues. I've done some more forum research to find that the outtake fan is weaker than the specs of the carbon filter, so the filter restricts airflow. Also the res is not light-tight, which I have been looking into this week. Basically if you can't keep your res temps down plan on having algal and or bacteria issues. Gonna have to get a chiller or something at some point this week... getting tired of switching water bottles, which is just fighting a losing battle. BCNL really needs to sort these issues as they claim they have "never heard" of temp problems like this before...

That's funny because I found a thread w. back and forth emails to BCNL reps about these IDENTICAL temperature issues. Great system; flaw = ignorance of design problems / smoking the chronic.

Otherwise lots of bud sites popping up.. New growth since CO2 is really nice. I'm not too worried about the root rot as I just bleached all the lines and stuff and have a fresh res.. I just hope I didn't shock them too much with the transfer and bath today.. Some vertical growth across the board, especially in my beefiest lady. I think I will wind up at about 2/3 the available height of the box interior, which is perfect. No need for lst, etc. because I vegged em short. Sativa pheno is definitely noticeable. I'm getting real excited!

light during dark cycles can cause your girls to turn hermy even if it is as small as a candle light it is said never seen it myself but dont no if I would chance it plus it could as your asking postpone sex differentiation, If it is elongating your day time period. cover any light that leaks in make it dark if at all possible.

I have it in a room with all windows covered where no light can get thru. if I need in the room during dark periods I have a green bulb in the overhead socket I can turn on to see, and reg bulbs I can screw in during its daytime. seems to work good also I dont know if you had covered it or not in previous threads I think so but its early here so I cant remember there are light leaks on the lid of the res down the irrigation tubes a piece of black mylar works good to cover those up. again sorry if you had already covered this just wanted to drop a note while I was thinking about it as this was a common cause of root rot thru algae and bacterium growth

oh yeah there it is you did comment on the res lol in the thread above our current topic yeah drop some mylar down it will light proof that res

Yeah. I'm just boggled that anyone can run these without huge root rot problems. I've been at 5+ ml/gal 29% hyox since this was an issue a couple weeks back. I've also been keeping the res temps down (or trying). Saturday was my second time totally removing the res and bleaching everything out, and yet I doubt I am out of the woods. I need a way to fight this more effectively, because after this week there is no way those babies are going to be lifted out of their spots ever again, the root systems are just too large.

Also I find it hard to believe that BCNL can expect ANYONE to keep their box in a room that is completely dark until 9am... I've been thinking about switching my timers because that is absurd. Where in the world is there somewhere that's totally dark from 9pm to 9am. I gotta feel like if random indirect light in a room with blinds is enough to herm or delay flowering 85% of the customer base would be fucked because they would never even think about it.

I have often wondered the same thing, on the issue of light in the room I just figured it would be better safe than sorry. however, on another note i do think that several pc journals have mentioned that she is a late sexer so that might have something to do with it. I wish that we could get another opinion on the light issue from someone else that has ran one of these babies. You could always just drop some dirt in there and hand water bc growers have stated that soil ups thc content also it makes the bud have a better taste would still be sensimillia as long as they didnt get cross pollinated, from another male. and you would be able to eliminate your root rot issue and deal with slightly higher temps without as much of a problem. and say to hell with those ice bottles.

I just put my seedings under the CFL in the clone dome. It doesn't seem like it it warm enough and I do not see any condensation building up on the inside of the dome. Should the fan be running at this point or is there a way to override it to make it warmer and increase the humidity?
