Beginner guitar songs

Just now starting to get "let her cry" and "no woman no cry" down pat. Switching through the cords nicely. Any suggestions for songs I should learn. I've got an electric/acoustic Johnson...hehe...no amp though.

also depends on if you have an acoustic or electric...

you can play both, but you will enjoy hearing your guitar sounding as the one on the track does... helps a beginners ear...
 
Nice taste SrV. Roomman, just starting out I'd suggest playing songs built almost exclusively around simple chord progressions to familiarize yourself with a good deal of chords and to break in your fingers. Finger picking is also a good little technique to develop as a beginner, try learning simple fingerpicking songs some by Iron & Wine or Death Cab For Cutie...but most importantly develop your own style and try as soon as possible to begin composing your own songs. I know close to F all about guitar but people seemed to like playing green day songs like boluveard of broken dreams. Tried that one?

there are a shitload of songs that only use the chords A, D, and G.

you can try those over and over until you're comfortable.
 
in the past 6 years i've learned "i've been working on the railroad" at least 5 times. i couldn't remember the first 5 cords right now to save my life.

i tried and tried and tried. i can learn songs by reading tabs, but once i learn one and move on to the next i forget the first one. i can't seem to find "my groove". i practice, practice, practice and still can't seem to get past a certain point.

i'm considering buying a bass. kinda what i always wanted to play to begin with.

A bass is literally next on my list.

I've got guitar down to a technical enough point where I can funk my own stuff out... But I want to get on those fat strings with the slaps and the plucks and realllllly flesh that funk out!


I feel like guitar is almost limited in it's funk ability... It's great fun to play some songs.. finger picking/rhythm/classical but I want the ability to jam with my friends in the backgrounds on their guitars... or just slapping a funky rythm..

The problem is I can't buy a cheapo instrument, I'm used to the decent maple necks and hard wood bodies! So I've got to get like $600+ together I think for a good bass and a decent amp? My guitar cost a little more than that even.

Great thread! I've been playing, off and on, for about 45 years. One of the first songs every guitarist learned back then was House Of The Rising Sun.

I'm currently in an "on" phase, playing pretty much daily for the past couple years. It's funny though, I have noticed that when I leave it in the case for a couple years, when I do take it out I can soon do stuff I could never do before. Not suggesting that as an improvement method however :)

You can pick up a nice Fender Jazz Bass on Craigslist for usually $350-600. I love the Fender Jazz probably my all time favorite bass. I played one for years. If you don't need some super sick stacked amp, I recommend a nice little Ampeg that can be had for $150-500.

edit: if you want to spend a little extra you can get better models of the jazz bass. Here's one close to me

Fucking Geddy Lee model, they have a slimmer neck so they're hella easy to play.
