I smoke once a week and I'm in my second year of college (I live in the UK), aspiring to be a General Practitioner, and I was wondering if anyone with experience or knowledge would be able to answer these questions:

1. Do doctors get drug tested?
2. If so, what are the consequences of a positive test?
3. Due to moral values, I would consider breaking the law by recommending that cancer/AIDS patients use the holy herb, but would I be arrested/fired for doing this?
4. Are any of you doctors/nurses, if so, what have your stoner doctor experiences been?

I have no idea really, but I imagine whatever agency giveth your license could probably taketh away for recommending "illegal illicit substances".

Truth be told there are many more users in the medical field than most would care to admit, and some of those don't include marijuana ;)

In America doctors don't get drug tested. None of my friends did and neither did the physicians assistant that I know, though the P.A. did keep clean for a bit as he was looking for employment elsewhere. In America your liscensure for narcotics is given by the dea to write scripts, violating this by writing illegal scripts or covering up drug tests that a patient burns due to mj use is very punishable. In America you cannot have a narcotic perscription from a pain managment facility and piss positive for MJ. There used to be a substitute, tramadol, that dr's would give to patients that were honest about MJ use. Sadly this drug has been rescheduled as a controlled substance. All this probably matters nigh because you're in the UK.

Don't know if there r UK differences but here's my local experiences:

Question 1: might get a pre-employment drug screen if hospital based doc, but rules will be set by ur group or if u r private practice u will have to decide whether or not to test ur self. :)

2: depends on who/why test is done, but if u generate a lot of revenue for a facility, they won't go out of their way to find out things they would rather not know.

3: follow the law! If illegal to recco, use careful statements: "while my official advice is to follow the law, some patients have reported that they relieved their sx with marijuana." if allowed by law, prescribe as indicated.

4: I have certainly heard of paramedics and nurses being stoners here in NorCal, but there is still stigma among some. Be careful who u reveal ur self too, and maintain a good professional appearance. Don't mix work and medical/recreational pot!

Answer... seriously, ever seen it??

Answer... I'm still loling at # 2 and #3

If you live in the UK you should know the answer to your own questions, Yes doctors do get drug tested, and tested for aids and hep c. positive test your history. If you suggest patients use any drug that is not prescribed you would be fired! 100%. I think maybe you should consider another career. :roll:

Considering their access to many drugs at arms reach, I would just assume that marijuana wouldn't even be on the top 5 list.

But, hear me out here, what if my patient and I kept this a secret in return for advice on how to use it properly for their medical condition, sort of like a mutual trust? Maybe my values are just too strong, but it shouldn't be illegal anyway :weed:

Your right Mojo, my daughters a nurse and one of the doctors on her ward was a drug user he even used to go through the sharp's boxes for needles. He is no longer a doctor!
