Best MH bulb and best HPS bulb for 1000w dimmable lumatek ballast?

What is the best bulb for my 1000w lumatek? I've heard of popped bulbs and failed ignitions with certain brands. I've also heard that these problems have been fixed with the new dimmable models.(true/false?) I would like to know the most reliable bulb for use with the lumatek(one that isn't going to quit firing after a month), as well as the best grow/bloom bulb in general,digital ballast or not(As far as lumens and spectrum). I've heard good things about the hortilux hps but have heard mixed reports of them paired with the lumatek ballasts. I only need the MH at the moment, but will need the HPS soon enough so information about either or both is greatly appreciated.

I would strictly use an "Eye Hortilux 1000 Hps" all the way from start to finish. It has the most lumen output for any hps bulb on the market. Mh is ok, But, Hps is used by like 85% of the growers out there. Thats all ya need. :-P

from what i understand eye hortilux bulbs and lumatek ballast are hit or miss, some lumatek ballast just wont fire them and some will for whatever reason? My buddy just got a new 600 lumatek dial-a-watt and he went with cheapo 15-20$ plantmax mh and hps bulbs, they fire right up and work just fine! All those extra lumens and spectrum of the "Eye" wont outperform a cheapo bulb if it's blown?

Well thanks thats good to hear because thats what I've been running..I was a bit weary of using the eye hortilux but I picked one up for next to nothing that had only been used for 1-1/2 cycles. I was thinking a MH was better for vegetative growth..I could be wrong though..does anyone else have any input on the MHvsHPS for veg?

I get what you're saying..luckily one of my buddies gave me a used 1000w HPS eye for about the price of the cheap bulbs. I've been running it for close to a week on 24/7 dimmed down to 600w and so far no problems..If anyone is interested I will keep them updated on how the Eye HPS is performing.

Horti is the best all around. anything made by phillips is the best,. cfl or hid. horti is phillips. and i dont even waste time with a mh all hps from seed...no stretch if ya use it right. the eye have blue as the mh do so no need for 2 and has more life and lumens to them. the blue in the mh is a better colour, but dies quicker than a dual hps
lumatec and horti fixed the old issuses with the wrong strike up frequency that blew the bulbs and the rf interference was done long ago as well.

Old thread I know, but it came up in my search. But anyways, a question for Bobsgreen;

How do you find using the dimmer and bulb life? I've heard dimming bulbs not only shortens their life, but you aren't exactly getting what you think. Ex. Running a 600w bulb on a 400w setting will give less lumens and use more power than just using a 400w bulb, as well as shorten the bulbs life. If this is true, then it would make more sense to just pair up matching wattages.

Can you comment at all on any of that from first hand experience?

Thanks
