Best raised bed barrier?

Hey everyone! Well, this upcoming spring I am going to be growing in raised beds, but I've thought about it and don't know what would make the best walls/siding for the bed. Anyone with experience know? I was originally thinking wood, just because it wouldn't get hot, but then I thought about how it could prevent the roots from getting extra oxygen. What about other materials like a smart pot with it's bottom cut out? Maybe an airpot (the black plastic(?) thing with all the holes)? Come on people give me your ideas :D

Do it the right way and you will be rewarded. Sounds like you are looking for a short cut. If you want extra oxygen then you can use pvc with holes cut in and put inside the bed to deliver extra oxygen to the roots. In my bed used last season the roots spread great for me. dirrtyd

I use the really large smart pots in place of raised beds. I see no reason you couldn't use a large one and cut the bottom out - this would allow you to stake it into a rectangle as well if you wanted. Might be able to do the same thing for cheaper with a roll of burlap and some wooden stakes/2x4s.

i think a smart pot or geo pot with the bottom cut out would be a great raised bed but i wouldnt go spending money on new smart/geo pots to cut up .. get some used ones on craigslist ! i also saw people get 4 pallets and stuff between them with like sticks and straw and then fill that up !!! now thats big
