It takes quite a while to break them up. They come apart into 4 segments and then I put the in a wheelbarrow and break them up with the claw of a hammer. Then I add lots of water and let them soak it all up. Usually over night. After then it's all by hand to break up the smaller pieces but the moisture makes it easier. I think I did 5 bricks to a bail this year. Maybe 4 can't remember exactly. I have a surplus of like 30 leftover from a guerrilla grow a few years ago. I do one or one and a half at a time to save room for the promix. I mix them in the wheelbarrow by hand. You can break them up dry by hand if your doing it guerrilla and don't want to pack in heavy damp coir. Maybe someone has a better method or knows of a coco brick that is less compact and easier to break up. Another note, I use slow release fertilizer to keep a supply of nutrients, cause I work away for weeks sometimes months at a time.

thanks for that info....Also, I am in the same boat as you...I may not get to my grow plot for weeks.....What kind or brand of slow release nutes do you use ? And I am assuming this setup has worked well for you in the past ?

In the past I used Advanced nutrients heavy harvest, the summer and fall blend but they quit making it and local hydro stores are sold out. I'm sure I'll get flack for this but a mans gotta do what man has to do. last year and this year I'm using miracle grow shake and feed for hanging baskets and containers. 19-6-12. And no I couldn't taste it and it flushed and burned perfect. I laid on the molasses pretty heavy whenever I was around during flowering, and the extra bulk was noticed daily. I just used crosbys blackstrap molasses from the grocery store. Here's Last years girl on harvest day sept 9. ( could have gone another 1-2 weeks ) but I found mold in the middle of my best lateral after 4 days of solid rain

You can't jus soak the whole bricks and then shred them up?

you could if you have the patience i guess. but ive tried soaking over night whole they never soaked up all the water and they were still dry inside. And even after you break them up to soak, you have to get your hands dirty to crush the rest of the lumps. these are the only type of bricks ive tried and they are extremely compact. There might be a brand that makes a less dense coir brick. back when i was doing guerrilla, and prepping holes, brigging out whole bricks was a mistake. i had thought they would absorb water and expand quite quickly but that was a mistake, the sourounding ground was soaking up the water faster than the bricks so we had to break them up by hand in the middle of the bush, and it was a major pain in the ass.

would it be ok to mix in some coco brick chopped up in there to help retain water for those of us who can't get to our outdoor stuff for weeks at a time ?
Anyone think this would work ?
