I chose soil for a few reasons. 1) I do like the taste better (but you may not); 2) I don't have easy access to running water nearby; and 3) if you screw up, you probably only screw up one plant with soil, not all of them.
The latter can be pretty important. I had a friend start with hydro when I started with soil. He got a bad pump, crop died. He screwed up the nutes one day, crop died. By the time he finally got a crop done, I was on my third finished crop and had a stash of four different strains, and he still had nothing. (I gave him some of mine to console him.)
But whatever works for you. I've been soil for years, and can't foresee ever changing, but what's best for me may not be great for you.
