Not big game for shooting but an interesting backstory going back decades:
Mostly "rent" for a cool million per year, in advance, per pair, (always per pair not singularly), 10 year lease agreement although China forbids the use of "lease" or "rental" in the agreement or publicly. Specially constructed state of the art enclosures and food menus have to be approved by China, ownership of bears and cubs always remains with China. Should a cub be born in activity, there is a baby tax levied by China against the foreign birth zoo (historically having been reported as $400,000 to $600,000 per cub and it's not unusual for twin births). The cubs once they reach 2-4 years of age have to be returned to China for their breeding program. The bears can be "recalled" at anytime for any reason, no refunds. Annual cost of bear maintenance about $300-500k per bear. FedEx donates the transport to and from China in a special 777F "Panda Express" plane specially outfitted for the bears and the vets. Zoo panda veterinarians although not required to, often attend the Dujiangyan Panda Base HQ for specialized training. China considers them to be national treasures...and the Americans love them!
