Biochar

I'd like to know if Biochar can also replace Perlite, as in does it have similar oxygen storing capacity, plus provide a warm cosy home for all the microscopic little creatures that want to move in?

No, not on a 1 to 1 basis. Biochar is extremely alkaline, so you really have to be careful if you want to make it more than 5-10% of a mix, and even then, you need to account for it when you figure out how much buffer (oyster shell/dolomite) to add.

Thanks for that, I learn so much here. I've not even purchased Biochar before so wasn't even sure of its, texture, so I assumed it is like coal. I'll give it a try at the rate you recommended thanks.
