Black Knats, what are they?

My last grow I noticed some small Black Knats. I noticed them late into flower, when the aroma was very particularly fruity! I would notice a couple of these Knats fly up while rustling the plant for watering. I started to just shake the plant a little, and slap the Knats as they tried to fly away, After a few days of this! they were all gone. So glad there was no major infestation? These are the first pests I've encountered. I think I have heard these referred to as fungus Knats. They definitely seemed more interested in the flowers, than the soil.

They sound like fungus gnats, and the females will have laid their eggs in your medium.
You need to treat your medium with baccilus thuringiensis/mosquito dunks to kill off any larvae.
If your not growing organic, hydrogen peroxide will get rid of them.

Ya fungus gnats. They will eat holes in your leaves. But it's the larvae in the soil that is the main problem. They will attack the roots. I had them and they didn't put up much of a fight. I bought some stuff at the grow shop, mix with your watering and you should be all set. Better than spider mites anyway

Check for root aphids. They are often mistaken for fungus gnats but are way worse.

For gnats use mosquito dunks or gnatrol.

For aphids you need mallet and orthene.

No reason to wait. Treat. Your seedling won't know the difference but the gnats sure will.

5 gallon, drop in dunk and let it soak in the water for a while before watering. You can't overdo it.

Retreat on 5 day intervals for a while.
