Ohio Man Arrested In FBI Sting After Allegedly Plotting July 4th Attack

Demetrius Pitts, also known as Abdur Raheem Rafeeq, was arrested on Sunday by members of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force after allegedly planning an attack on behalf of al Qaeda with an undercover agent.

The 48-year-old Pitts, of Maple Heights, Ohio, was charged Monday with one count of attempting to provide material support to al Qaeda. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.

FBI Director Christopher Wray, in a statement issued on Monday, praised his agents and condemned Pitts’ alleged plans for an attack on “a day our citizens should be able to celebrate our freedom without fear of violence.”

“This arrest shows the determination of the men and women of the FBI and our partner agencies to protect our communities from harm,” Wray said. “I extend my thanks not just to those who worked on this case, but to all those who safeguard our nation every day.”

According to a copy of the federal complaint against Pitt, from 2015 to 2017 he expressed anti-American sentiments and a desire to recruit people to kill Americans. He was first flagged to authorities in late 2015 after sending to a political commentary program a Facebook message that encouraged violence against the U.S

He later met with an undercover FBI agent who was posing as a fellow al Qaeda follower and detailed his plans to attack Cleveland as well as Philadelphia, where he was born, authorities said.

In their conversations, Pitts allegedly laid out possible attacks on military bases, service members, federal buildings and a cathedral in downtown Cleveland and expressed a desire to harm President Donald Trump.

“I’m gonna be downtown when the — when the thing go off. I’m gonna be somewhere cuz I wanna see it go off,” Pitts allegedly told the agent of his plan, which involved explosives.

He was taken into custody on Sunday morning during a meeting with the agent about planning a second attack in Philadelphia, authorities said

I find it quite disturbing that this dude was arrested for what doesnt seem to be anything more than dark musings.

If he'd a big cache of weapons, explosives or at least large quantities of precursors to make explosives thats a different story.

I mean, I've discussed the entire human race being destroyed before online, it was a tongue in cheek discussion about the massive amount of stupid on the planet...

Doesn't mean I'm planning on wiping everyone out.

We can't just arbitrarily call people terrorists and lock them up for 20 years.

These are your tax dollars at work; framing people of limited intelligence and then trotting them out as 'evidence' of their hard work to 'keep America safe'.

To call it disingenuous and self serving is an understatement.

Wanna bet on that? Our country's law enforcement agencies will happily throw your Constitutional rights under the bus for their own aggrandizement. In today's climate they will get away with it. Or just shoot you in the back...

Why do you think I've been screaming 'FASCISM!' at the top of my lungs?!

But Mr. Putin is your hero. Did you send him a congratulatory note on his election?

He actually met with undercover FBI agents and in their conversations, Pitts allegedly laid out possible attacks on military bases, service members, federal buildings and a cathedral in downtown Cleveland and expressed a desire to harm President Donald Trump.
I'm sure you did not take your rant offline and meet with undercover agents. That's like an @fdd2blk move

Do you have any idea how many of these cases have eventually uncovered the fact that the FBI coached the 'perp' (victim of lawfare) into an inclination situation and then arrested them?

Maybe this guy really was a clear and present threat. But there's significant doubt based on the record.

The day you go and meet someone to discuss a plan attack on innocent civilians, you lose with me.
The guy meet with undercover FBI. They did not force him to meet or talk.

One thing I hate about the current state of affairs, is as long as you are on the map of politics in the United States, you're licking boots.

I realized when I was 17 during the End of the Bush administration that I was as anti authoritarian as it gets. The patriot act and all the security over freedom the right pushed at the time (and still do), turned me off so much that I became Democrat leaning by default.

Fast forward to today, nobody cares about the ever increasing infringement on our freedom from anyone. The right thinks cops and the military can do zero wrong and the left now loves the FBI and thinks they can do no wrong.

That's why I'm a Progressive, because it's clear both parties are bought and paid for by the same donors.

You can thank Citizens United and Buckley v Valeo for that.

Yeah but talk is talk, is there any indication he was anything but isolated, lonely and looking to be part of anything to just feel he belongs?

Are we talking about Padawan...?
