Black tomatoes...Not weed.

Hey y'all,

Silly question probably but last year I grew a bunch of cherry tomatoes and the seeds that fell into soil regrew this year and I got black tomatoes and red ones too. Are these black ones safe to eat ? And does anyone know why they are black ? See attached photos. Appreciate your help.
Take to gardening thread. Recumbent genetics from parents. Not uncommon. I grew purple passion variegated years ago. Delicious. Trace genealogy of last years seeds. If residual regrowth??? Should be as edible as last year.

Those looks like they were crossed with a variety we have. The name escapes me.

I think ours are calls Brad's Atomic.
I was so disappointed in the Brad's atomic tomatoes. Didn't look anywhere like the pictures which I figured were doctored up pretty good, but they weren't even close. And the flavor was so bland. I have grown quite a few varieties of dark and black tomatoes over the years and the black cherry were always at the top of my list for those varieties. That said, pound for pound, sungold cherry tomatoes are still the best ever!!!

We started some sungolds in December of last year and then moved them outside, they were massive bushes. I tried eating 1 beads atomic and it was very meh, as you describe. Probably won't grow those again.

Yeah. They had all kinds of hype just because the crazy colors, but I feel like those pics were over saturated and had those colors blown out. I really miss growing tomatoes in my garden but I picked up a tomato allergy the last couple years and I have zero self control when it comes to just eating them all straight out the garden. Haha

I do a few full sized (usually Cherokee Purple) and another 3 or 4 cherry varieties. This year I started them in the tent at the end of February and got them in-ground last week of May. With good LED lighting and tent-temps, they were ~4 feet tall by the time they got in the garden and already flowering.

The 5 plants grew this year were so plentiful that about 4 weeks into tomato season our bodies had had enough of any raw tomatoes and were 'rejecting the transplant'. It was pounds of them a day. We moved to slow-roasting them and freezing them for use during the cold months. I'm still unable to consider eating a fresh/raw tomato at this point though. I'm pulling the vines next week though they're still producing and flowering. We're done for the year. ;)

Sungolds are the ladies favorite. That's all she wants me to grow along with some beefsteak tomatoes.

And I discovered Bumblebee this year.Bumblebee is a large cherry tomato dark with stripes when ripening. One of the best I've eaten.
I saw those last winter and almost ordered a pack. I'm guessing they are worth it then? I'll snag a pack for next year

I thought it a strange coinkydink this afternoon, after reading this thread this morning, to discover that the USDA just gave approval to sell these wee paw-paw looking maters in stores.

We have done well in the past with Sweet 100. All things tomato of mine fell on their face this year.
