I think I’m gonna get a couple of hens. My kids almost 5, I think it’d be good for her. Plus, free eggs! I have enough kitchen scraps to keep two hens happy without paying too much extra for supplemental feed
Do some heavy reading about it before you get them. They're a lot more work than most people realize. The biggest issue my neighbor has is predation by racoons, foxes, coyotes and hawks. The smell can get bad in the summer too depending on how often you muck out the litter. I've come close to doing it a couple times over the years but it's just too much work for me.

No, I mean... I like fresh eggs AND fried chicken. If they annoy me, I will eat them. It’s okay to have fresh eggs for three months till I decide we don’t want chickens anymore. My kid only lives with me 4 days a week, plenty of time for a chicken to disappear in her absence.

It takes many months before you get eggs. Till then you need to keep the little ones safe and warm. Like in a cage, then a caged in kiddy pool.....then outside in the coop. It's also when they are trying to figure out their wings soooo the crap in the bottom of those smaller coops goes everywhere. It's absolutely disgusting. We started them in our mudroom.

Also if you only get two, one will die. It's cald "the pecking order" because only one is top dog and will kill the other. Lone chickens don't do well though. I'd say min of four would keep them all in check.

I did it for the compost. Chicken shit is worth a lot more than the eggs imo :)
