well I just switched from cfls for vegging to MH. I had about 250W of cfls but the plants are doing much better on a 150W MH.

im growing with CFLs, you need A LOT of them. reflectors + mylar/flat white paint on walls helps.

MH is the shit. i did that last time before i moved and couldnt bring them along =(

Really. cfls are a handjob. HIDs are real pussy. My plants are just zipping along now that I have the 150W MH and that's about 100w less than the cfls that I was using. Plus I was always burning leaves because you have to have them so close. I've ordered a 250W ballast.

cfls are great for supplementary lighting.

people get sooo touchy when you diss on CFL bulbs. But in all honesty, they suck ass for growing purposes. Even supplemental lighting..you get soo little bang for the buck.

Now the cfl jihadists are going to be on your back. I know this isn't PC but all light bulbs aren't created equal. Some are just naturaly brighter than others!

I got the ballast kit on ebay for $35 and the bulb for $20. Another $20 tops for sundry items such electrical enclosure and mogul socket and it's still less than I spent on my 250W cfl setup. I'll put the 150W MH in the flower cab with the 600W hps. Should be a nice combo

You can save a chunk of change on the smaller MH lights by buying a ballast kit and assembling it yourself. Once you get to 400W, the price difference between a kit and a ready made magnetic ballast it's not worth it.
