lol here we go....i say total opposite your light distance is ok but you have it under the base not where the light is its stretching pretty bad..at that height my plants usually are going on three sets of leaves already...heres some basics that will help you - use good soil, start your seedlings in party cups, keep seedlings wet until they are about 3-4 inches with a second set of leaves growing then water normally which is watering only when the top of soil is drying up...if you do these 3 things thats it simple plants grow themselves all you have to do is help a bit

i usually keep my flourescent lights about 2-4 inches off the top of cups straight from seed and have NEVER had a heat problem..^ hes right tho wont hurt to throw a fan in their direction just not blowing directly on them

Your lights aren't 240 watts like the OP's I'm assuming.

A seedling getting that intense heat is going to be stunted.

More water than that, spread it around the pot. Make the roots seek it out.

if you keep the soil too moist when they are that young you can rot the stems. this is probably one of the most precarious times in the hardy plant we grows entire life cycle. just keep things simple. now that you have established seedlings let the soil dry out a bit more. check out the making it rain watering method, works brilliantly in veg. makes the plants explode like u wont believe. the more you let the soil dry the more roots the plants will produce as it searches for water. i only water once a week when they are that small. water till u get some run off so you know all the soil is moist. then let it dry almost completely then water again. then watch them grow. remember the plants roots need oxygen. if you over water its stops them getting that oxygen as the airpockets in the soil get filled with water and the roots kinda drown.

are your lights actual watts or incadescent equivalent?

ok ill keep that in mind thanks! ahh nar actual watts are 120 watt =240 and 48 watt there biggest cfls i could get in the warehouse in my area

dont take any lights away then. just get the air circulating and keep the temps stable. once youve got the environment right its smooth sailing from there

.....no i just said in my first post NOT to do that lol you want to fully wet it and then leave it you cannot water a little here a little there that is bad!

what og said above is correct the roots need gas exchange so you want to fully water it and then let it dry on the top couple inches...i would say you will wind up watering every 4 or so days though, once a week might be a bit of a stretch but you need to feel it out yourself because it all depends on room temp and pot size and stuff...

also i usually keep my seedling on the weter side until they are a couple inches with a couple sets of leaves and have never had any type of rot or anything...as long as you only do this when hey are real small then switch to letting them dry out a bit it causes no problems..and a wet seedling is better than a dried out seedling :D

I think the term 'overwatering' is quite confusing for a lot of Newbies. Watering too often and not enough would describe the problems better. I agree with the above post regarding the roots seeking water. When I transplant my seedlings into 10 cm pots I don't need to water them for a week or so.

When they get bigger I even check the base holes to guage how dry it is.
