Buds without flowering nutrients?

back in the day, without specific flowering nutrients, were buds much smaller?or does that have to do purely with genetics?
Wow. This is a really interesting question to ask. After all, if buds are the same size today that they were in the past, then why add all of these new nutes to the mix? Makes sense to ask this. And I don't know if I've ever seen someone else ask this. Nice.

Here's what I think, not sure if there is science to back it up.

Plants used to get all the nutrients they needed from the ground. If the soil didn't have the nutes in it, then the plants would die and farmers would move their plants elsewhere in order to find the sweet spots again.

Once the nutes were used up in one area, they needed to be introduced to that area again or the place wasn't a place where you planted things anymore. Enter:science and research.

When we began to realize that nutes were the things that plants used to create more flowers, then it made sense to create artificial nutrients to take their place - especially when you're not running soil with its natural nutrients (though soil only has about a month's worth in it).

But your question is whether buds are bigger now. Probably. I mean, if we're able to tinker with the nutrient levels and all of the other environmental issues today than we are probably growing bigger plants. If you look at conventional farm products vs. organics, the organics are smaller, so it makes sense that MJ buds would be smaller too without the fancy technology we now use.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Well, it depends on what you're worried about. High quality smoke? Yes, you want to have bigger buds, but it's their THC percentage that matters. If you don't have a lot of THC, your buds could be as big as soccer balls and the smoke wouldn't be all that good.

I'm all for adding flowering nutes because it seems that when I started adding them, my buds got bigger. Now, I didn't measure the weight or the size from one grow to another, so it might just be that I think they're bigger. Or hope.

I think all of my grows have gotten better and better because of Advanced Nutrients and other nutes I've used. And the more I use and the more that I learn, the better my grows are getting. And hopefully there is no limit to this.

Farmers have been using nutrients for thousands of years (as a side note).

Think: dead fish + silt in Mesopotamia.
