building cheap carbon filter, need some advice

okay, so my bro is going to go buy some of that activated carbon from wal-mart...

He just wants to use the original container, drill 3-4 holes in the bottom, empty it and put a coffee filter at the bottom and replace charcoal. Ducttape computer fan to the top.... haha just check out the pic It will explain more how hes thinking.

Questions - Will this work? If his grow is in a closet, could he just hang this device in middle of flowering plants and still have closet open with no smell?

You will need more than a PC fan to pull air through the carbon.

I use Ona Gel for my odor control, and it works great.

I have ona gel, it does work, but im working on alternatives (ona is not cheap!)

Ona will add up after while.

You could use a higher powered axial fan like this one, or an 8" duct fan like this one, the smaller duct fans don't have much power and will have difficulty pulling through the carbon.

Ozone is another option. I use it sometimes, mostly after I smoke, and expecting people over. I bought it as a backup for the Ona, but the Ona has yet to fail me.

Do you think if I just hung this device in the middle of the ladies, that this would be sufficient, my bro is currently running this out of a closet with no in/out fans etc. Just a door with lights and a fan, which remains shut, he simply leaves a small attic hole at the top of the closet slightly cracked.

I'd vent right into the attic, and try to find a way to have fresh air to come in, like a passive vent or something at the bottom of the closet.

The carbon filter could be above the plants, but not in a way that blocks your light source, like off to the side a little.

thx bro, the smell literally has gone out of hand since ona dried up.... this is a MUST for todays list, one way or the other its getting covered up. I'm going to use a large server fan for the carbon and the door. Going to place the fan at the bottom, drill a couple of holes.

Another thing you could try is the Gonzo bags. I've yet to try one, but I know of plenty of people that swear by them

omg man, that brings up some stuff.... I bought one, they dont fucking work.. Im assuming you need 3-5 for it to work (if they do)... The one I bought leaked fucking volcanic dust all over my babies, I was so pissed off.

This is the first bad I heard about them.

I always wanted to try one, but I can't really take any chances on smells getting out of my cabinets. I have Skunk going and it wont take much for it to smell up the entire house....

I'll probably be using Ona until I get a bigger grow room, right now I just have four 2 x 2 x 4 cabs, 2 with 240 watt Blackstars, 1 with a 90 watt HTG LED, and the 4th with 272 watts CFL. I want to get a 5 x 10 tent with six 500 watt Blackstars. Then I'll either use more Ona, or just get a carbon filter.

Did you try making an Ona bucket, with soil moist, water, Ona gel, and a fan? It lasts a lot longer, and works better than just using the blocks in the small jars.

Hey guys , I just got one of those gonzo bags yesterday but I had heard they where pretty good, havent put it near plants but hoping it will help with
the smell in the room....

Absolutley amazing and i still use it today. its not joking when it says its silent and covers 100 Sq. Feet.
Another thing to help you feel safe. my mom used to come in the house downstairs right next to my room. and my room had no lock. she wasn't afraid to walk in. on top of that. when it came to marijuana back then. she was like a fuckin mormon. it may be a little pricey for some. but it will work forever. 5 years and counting!
