Burning Smell coming from MH/HPS 600 watt grow light

Recently got a new light it is a 600 watt Hps/Mh
When i put in my MH bulb i start to get a burning smell coming from the bulb after i turned off the light i took out the bulb and noticed some black spots on the tip of the bulb that is plugged into the fixture. I then tried to my old HPS bulb and it smelt the same but after a few minutes the smell went away. Trying again i put the 600 watt MH bulb in the fixture and dimmed it 50% power and the smell came back. I tried cleaning the bulb and the fixture but there really wasn't anything to clean. I read online that the problem could come from oil on the bulb or plastic being burnt but there is no plastic near the light

.I've tried running the light on and off for a day and smell starts after 5 minutes of being on and after an hour i have to turn it off because it smells so bad. It is a 600 watt mh IPower bulb and i'm using a 600 watt IPower dimmable ballast

Any advice to help solve this problem will be appreciated

If your skin/fingertip/anything other than a clean microfiber cloth touched the bulb... it is most likely on the way to stuffed land ;)
Could be a manufacturing fault.. perhaps?

Did you touch the bulb at all...?

If you did, I have seen some success using a electrical contact cleaner on the bulb.... works sometimes, but prevention is always better than cure.

I personally buy micro fiber or cotton gloves for bulb changing, they are cheap and very effective at reducing 'whoopsies' with bulbs...

Not fun having a bulb pop in your face... I know @_@

Cheers Jimmy.

On second advice, you should pick up some contact cleaner, disconnect your lamp holder from the ballast and take the lamp and holder outside to a ventilated area and give them both a good hosing with the cleaner spray.

Give it at least 30mins to dry and reconnect.

Let us know how you go... ;)

I would guess it is either:
A. The contact is dirty/corroded
B. Your bulbs are not 'digital friendly'
C. Your lamp holder is stuffed

Cheers Jimmy.
